KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team began their final home weekend of the 2021 season Friday night with a visit from the 20th ranked and GLVC leading Lewis Flyers, and despite playing three tough sets, the Flyers were too much in the end as they defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-15).
Early in the first set, the match was very even as the teams split the first eight points of the match. Lewis would take a lead, but Truman hung tough and back to back kills from Hanna Berry tied the set up at 14. From there Lewis reeled off four straight, and from there Truman was forced to play catch up and couldn't close the gap.
Lewis took the first three points of the second set, but a block from Kate Benzing and Ainsley Heise got Truman on the board. Lewis pulled away in the middle of the set, but a 5-0 run late in the set pulled Truman within three at 21-18. Berry picked up a kill and two aces, Morgan Smith also got a kill. Unfortunately Truman could not pull any closer as Lewis took the second set.
By the third set, Lewis had all the momentum in their favor and led start to finish in the set to conclude the match.
Berry led the team with seven kills and three aces, Rachel DeFries led with 11 assists, Macy Vanfossan led with 13 digs and Benzing led with three total blocks.
The Bulldogs will host Illinois Springfield tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM on Senior Day at Pershing Arena.
