KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team returned home after a three match road swing last week, and returned home to take on GLVC opponent Southwest Baptist. The Bulldogs have dominated the series historically but the Bearcats got their first win over Truman since 1988 as they defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-12, 29-27, 25-21).
Emma Wollert and Ellie Kaat got the first set started with kills, but SBU turned the tide as they took a 9-5 lead. From there, SBU would continue to expand their lead and took the set to go up 1-0.
In the second set, Truman took the upper hand. Down 7-5, the Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run with three kills from Morgan Smith and two from Monica Brown. SBU came back to within 14-13, but Truman went on a 5-0 run with kills from Hanna Berry, Kaat and Wollert to go up 19-13. SBU came back to tie it at 23 eventually, but Smith gave Truman setpoint with a kill. SBU evened it up, and then Allison Beaton gave Truman another setpoint. Two points gave SBU setpoint, but a service error kept Truman alive. SBU had another setpoint, but Kaat evened it up. From a 27 all tie, SBU got back to back to take the set.
Truman jumped out to a 5-4 lead, but a 5-0 run put SBU in the lead 9-5. Maura Ploesser had back to back points with a kill and an ace to make it 9-7. SBU continued to expand their lead, reaching matchpoint at 24-17. A kill from Wollert and attack errors for the Bearcats kept Truman in it to make it 24-21, but Truman could not hold on as SBU ended the set and match.
Vanfossan set a new career high in digs with eight. Kaat led the team with nine kills, Smith led with 11 digs and Rachel DeFries led with 12 assists.
Truman will be at home this weekend as they host UMSL on Friday at 7 and then Quincy at 3.
