Bulldogs Come Up Short in Tightly Contested Showdown with Tritons

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team continued their week of home games Friday night as they hosted Missouri-St. Louis, the top team in the GLVC Central. The Bulldogs gave a great effort but ultimately fell short against the Tritons 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-13).

Early on the first set was fairly tight, with neither team getting more than three ahead of the other. With the score 10-8 in favor of the Tritons, UMSL went on a 4-0 run to go up 14-8. But Truman responded with a 5-0 run that included two kills from Ellie Kaat and one from Hanna Berry to draw back within one. From there UMSL would respond with six straight points and would see out the set from there.

The second set was where Truman seemed to get clicking. Truman took four of the first six points, with kills from Emma Wollert, Kaat and Rachel DeFries. Later an ace from Katy Motz made it 6-3, but from there UMSL took seven of the next nine to go up 10-8. From there the teams seesawed back and forth for the next nine points, resulting in a 14-13 score in favor UMSL. An attack error gave Truman the tie score. Two straight kills from Morgan Smith later in the set made it 17-16 Bulldogs, but a 5-0 spurt gave UMSL back the lead and Truman could not catch back up.

UMSL opened the third set with a 10-0 run, but from there the rest of the set was pretty even. In the middle of the set Truman took three of four points all on kills—from Ainsley Heise, Smith and Kaat. But the hole proved too deep to dig out of as UMSL took the set and match.

Smith led with nine kills, while DeFries led with 13 assists and Macy VanFossan led with 14 digs.

The Bulldogs will close out their week on Saturday at home against Quincy, first serve at 3 PM.
