Truman Women Grind Out First Win Of Season

MARSHALL, Minn. - Behind Ellie Weltha's 21 points and 16 rebounds, the Truman Women's Basketball team found the win column for the first time on the season with a 77-69 victory over Minot (N.D.) State on Friday evening. The Bulldogs return to the court Saturday to face Southwest Minnesota State at 4 p.m.

The Bulldogs (1-2) trailed by nine early on but battled back to head into the locker room tied at 34 at the break.  A Katey Klucking steal and layup in the first minute of the third quarter gave Truman their first lead of the game but seven straight from the Beavers put Minot back up 43-38.

Klucking again picked off a pass on the defensive end and raced down the court for the bucket to pull Truman back to within one at 45-42.

With the score knotted at 55, Hannah Belanger was just inside the arc to hit the basket with three seconds left in the quarter to give Truman a 57-55 advantage. The Bulldogs would start the fourth with possession and Klucking got a layup to fall to put Truman up by four.

Gracie Stugart would spark an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to take it from a two-point Truman lead out to 10 with 3:48 to play. Stugart would have four of the eight points during the run.

Emma Bulman gave Truman their largest lead at 11 on a made three-pointer with 57 seconds left.

The Beavers (2-4) got as close as six with 15 seconds left but Stugart drew a foul and made one of two at the line to seal the win.

Weltha was 10-15 from the field in 37+ minutes of work and nabbed 16 rebounds with 13 coming on the offensive end. Belanger added 18 and grabbed seven boards. Klucking finished with 14 and six assists and three steals and Maddie Re added a dozen.

Truman shot 47.6% for the game with only five three-pointers on 22 attempts.

Minot State was led by Amber Stevahn with 16 points and Kate Head with 14.

The Bulldogs will face host Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. The Mustangs dispatched Maryville (Mo.) University 79-65 in the session's nightcap. Tip off is slated for 4 p.m.
