MARSHALL, MInn. –
Ellie Weltha matched her career high with 26 points and added 14 rebounds as the Truman Women's Basketball team swept their pair of games in Marshall, Minnesota with a 73-62 victory over host Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday.
Weltha was 10-of-19 from the field with nine defensive rebounds and four offensive rebounds while also going 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Weltha scored 21 with 16 rebounds in Truman's win over Minot (N.D.) State on Friday and has scored over 20 in three of the first four games this season.
Truman basically led wire-to-wire after Weltha's four quick points out of the gate gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. That would spark a 16-4 run to start the game.
Emma Bulman's basket with 1:42 left in the first gave Truman their first double-digit lead at 18-6. They would end the first quarter up 21-10.
The Bulldogs extended their lead out to the game's biggest of 19 points with 5:45 to play in the first half and took 36-21 lead into the lockerrroom.
The Mustangs had had their best run of the game in a fourth quarter push and cut the lead down to five at 48-43 on a three pointer by Jenna Borchers.
Maddie Re scored five straight for Truman and Weltha closed it out as the Bulldogs finished the game on a 7-0 run.
Re added 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line with nine rebounds and
Hannah Belanger poured in 13 with a team-high three assists. Truman made just two three-pointers on the day on 17 attempts but scored 42 points in the paint and won the glass 44-34.
Meleah Reinhart led the Mustangs with 16 points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Springfield, Missouri for the Drury Thanksgiving Classic. The two games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon with the Bulldogs facing Union (Tenn.) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and Saginaw Valley (MIch.) State at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
