Missouri S&T Halts Truman's Tournament Hopes

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - A first half goal by Ally Hasken and an insurance goal from Sydney Gratz gave the Missouri S&T Miners a 2-0 victory over the Truman Women's Soccer team in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament.

The #6-seeded Miners (9-5-3), playing in their first tournament since 2014, struck in the 30th minute. Gratz dribbled the ball down the left side and fed a pass back up top. Hasken put her right foot on it and Truman keeper Beth Hopwood had it glance off her hands into the the top right corner of the net. It was Hasken's second goal of the season.

As time was clicking down, #3 Truman (10-4-3) began to push more into the offensive end. Lily Chung was able to swing the ball to the left side of the field to find a streaking Gratz. S&T's leading scorer made no mistake and powered the ball along the ground into the corner of the net for the insurance tally. It was goal number seven for Gratz.

Truman did not have many quality scoring opportunities. They had a pair of free kicks from 25 yards out that were gobbled up by S&T keeper Kristin Steins. The best chance came in the final minute when Faith Branson one-timed a shot that Steins dove and grabbed out of the air.

The Bulldogs had six shots on goal while S&T had three.

It was the 12th shutout this season in 17 games for the Miners while only the first time since the season opener that the Bulldogs allowed more than one goal in a game.

Truman was ranked in last week's regional rankings and will have to get some help to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. That field will be announced on November 15th.
