KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Men's Soccer team began its most unusual season Friday as they hosted Missouri S&T in the season opener. Spring soccer started out on a high note as Freshman
Sam Newton scored the game's only goal off a free kick in the first overtime from 35 yards out going from right to left that beat the keeper into the top left corner. Keeper
Joey Keane made seven saves to keep the Miners off the board. In the overtime period S&T had one scoring chance in overtime but Keane got down in time to corral the shot off the foot of the Miner's Thomas Jorgensen. A stellar defensive effort from the Bulldogs kept the Miners from scoring on six corner kicks.
Andy Brennan recorded two shots for the Bulldogs to lead the team, with one on goal. Ian McClusky also recorded a shot on goal, and
Thomas Weber and
Will Clayton also recorded shots. Newton's rocket shot in the 100th minute was his only shot, the first of his career and his first career goal.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Sunday as they take on Maryville in St. Louis. The match is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
