RECAP: Bulldogs Drop Series Opener at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill.--The Truman Baseball team got back in action Thursday afternoon at Quincy for the first game in a four game set with the Hawks. Ultimately the Hawks took the first game 12-2. Connor McKenna took the loss to drop to 0-4 on the season while Riley Martin picked up the win to move to 4-1. Sam Smith had his first multi-hit game as a Bulldog, and reached base three out of four times he went to the plate.

The first two innings saw the Bulldogs move a runner to second, but were unable to bring either in. In the third inning, Truman had a good chance to score after Smith got a leadoff single to left and then stole second base. Will Fromm singled to right to move Smith to third with one out. But with runners on the corners, the Bulldogs could not find a way to get on the board.

In the top of the fifth, with the game still hanging in the balance at 1-0, Brendan Kelly led off with a single. He moved the second on an RBI groundout, the second out of the inning, and then stole third. But once again, a runner 90 feet away was stranded. In the bottom of the fifth, Quincy put four across home to make it 5-0 and then would add another in the sixth to make it 6-0.

In the top of the seventh, Dakota Spicer led off with a single. Sam Smith doubled with one out to put runners on second and third. Kolin Demel was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Will Fromm. He reached on an error by the third baseman and the bad throw allowed Spicer and Smith to both come home.

Quincy scored six in the bottom of the seventh, in what would be the last inning of the game.

Truman faces Quincy in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. and then will compete in their final game of the series Saturday at 3:30.
