RECAP: Turner’s Walk-Off Lifts Bulldogs to Split of Saturday Doubleheader

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Baseball team got its first win of the series in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday against Drury as Luke Turner hit his first homerun since March 13th to lift the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh of game two 12-11. The Panthers took game one of the afternoon 6-2. Colby Childs moved to 1-1 on the season with a win in game one while Zachry Schneider dropped to 0-7 with the loss. In game two, Tucker Olson (1-1) got his first Bulldog win with a shutdown top of the seventh to allow the late heroics by Turner. Mason Meeks (0-4) took the loss for Drury.

Game One

Schneider and Drury's Bayler Hinz had a good pitcher's duel going early in game one. Both got through two innings without giving up a run. But in the third, Schneider got two outs to begin but the Panthers were able to muster a two out rally for three runs. In the bottom of the frame, Will Wirt singled and Dakota Spicer doubled to put two in scoring position with nobody out. Truman's first run came on a balk to bring Wirt home. In the bottom of the fifth, Justin Dietiker hit his first career dinger to make it 3-2. Drury struck for three more in the top of the seventh to make it 6-2.

Game Two

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Truman starter Michael Daggett ran into some trouble in the second. The Panthers put five runs up in the top of the frame, but Truman would answer. Holden Missey led off the frame with a deep double to center and Evan Kayser walked. Both were in scoring position after a groundout. Spicer hit a single through the left side to bring both in to score. Kayser was up again in the bottom of the third and hit his first homer since March 26, 2019 to make it 5-3.

Spicer led off the fourth with a solo shot to make it 6-4. Later in the inning, Kory Carter came up with the bases loaded and nobody out. He went down swinging, and Turner was brought in to pinch hit for Jack Darwin. He hit a ball deep enough to bring a run in on the sac fly. Truman got another run on a balk later in the inning to make it 6-6.

Drury scored the next five runs to make it 11-6. Fromm and Carter led off with back to back singles in the sixth. Turner hit a shot down the line in left and brought Fromm in to make it 11-7. Later with two outs, Spicer continued his big game with a two run single to bring in Carter and Turner. Kevin Donohue singled to bring Kayser in to score, making the game 11-10.

Olson relieved Alex Leary and shut down the Panthers 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Carter was second to the plate and got a one out double to put the tying run aboard. Turner followed and sent the fans home happy with a towering shot to left. Here is a video of the walk off:

Turner finished the game with four RBI in two at bats, three plate appearances; setting a new career high.

The Bulldogs will look for the series split tomorrow afternoon as they conclude their series with the Panthers at noon.
