KANSAS CITY--The Truman Baseball team opened their four game set at Rockhurst with a bang on Friday night as they raced past the Hawks 16-5. Connor McKenna (1-5) got his first win of the 2021 campaign with a six inning outing in which he allowed just one earned run. CJ July took the loss for the Hawks to drop to 2-3.
Truman got on the board first in the second as Sam Smith drew a walk with two outs. He swiped second base and then after Jake Schneider reached on an error moved to third base. Brendan Kelly singled to bring Smith in. Kevin Donohue singled to bring Schneider in from second, but Kelly was thrown out at the plate to keep it a 2-0 lead for the Bulldogs.
In the third, Dakota Spicer led off with a walk and then after a single by Steven Bradbury was driven in on an RBI single by Jack Darwin. Evan Kayser then singled to drive in Bradbury in. Later with the bases loaded, Kelly reached on an error that brought Darwin and Kayser in to make it a 6-0 game.
Rockhurst got on the board in the bottom of the third, putting up three runs. But Truman would answer in the top of the fourth as Bradbury doubled with one out to bring Donohue in to score to make it 7-3. Darwin followed with a double to bring Brabury in. Smith singled down the right field line to bring Darwin in, then Schneider singled to left to bring Holden Missey, who reached on an intentional walk, in to score. It was now 10-3 Bulldogs.
Bradbury continued to swing a hot bad in the fifth as he launched a two run shot to make it 12-3. Will Fromm came in at DH for Darwin and singled immediately following. Missey doubled to put runners on second and third for Kayser. Kayser reached on an error and Fromm came in to score. Smith followed with another RBI single to bring Missey in. After the top of the fifth, Truman led 14-3.
In the top of the sixth, Fromm singled with two outs and then Missey launched a shot over the wall in left to make it 16-3. The Hawks put two runs across in the bottom of the seventh, but it was still a seven inning victory for the Bulldogs.
Bradbury got a career high four hits in the game, which led the team and also led with three RBIs. Darwin, Missey, Kayser and Smith each had two RBIs.
The Bulldogs and Hawks will be back on the diamond for a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
