RECAP: Miners Spoil Bulldogs Senior Day

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Baseball team closed their 2021 campaign Sunday afternoon, the field was playable despite overnight rains that soaked it. Eight seniors were honored: Blake Bagenstos, Steven Bradbury, Ben Fugitt, Brendan Kelly, Evan Kayser, Trae Brownell, Reid Wilson and Kory Carter. But Missouri S&T managed to pull away late and down the Bulldogs 13-3. Kyle Fowler (1-0) got the win for the Miners while Jordan Marlott (0-5) took the loss.

After a scoreless first, S&T threatened in the second with two hitters reaching on walks. But Marlott managed to pitch his way out of the jam and keep it a scoreless game. In the bottom of the frame, Kayser reached on an error and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Kolin Demel followed with a double in his first start since April 9th, which drove Kayser in and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

From there S&T scored seven straight runs, but the Bulldogs still sought to make a game of it. In the bottom of the eighth, Bradbury singled to center to lead off and then Will Fromm singled on what would have been a hard play for the shortstop to move Bradbury to second. A groundout by Carter moved each of them up a base. Holden Missey followed and singled up the middle and drove both baserunners in. It was now 7-3. Unfortunately the Bulldogs could not continue the momentum and it remained a four run game. In the top of the ninth Kayser and Carter each had their respective curtain calls, but the Miners struck for six in the frame.

The Bulldogs conclude their season with seven wins, and will return quite a bit of talent from this year's team. Holden Missey and Will Fromm, who each hit over .300, leading base stealer Sam Smith, top starters Connor McKenna, Zachry Schneider and Michael Daggett; among many others.

For the eight Bulldogs who played their last game in a Truman uniform, thank you for your time and effort given to the program and best of luck to you all in your future endeavors.
