KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—A streak that lasted nearly three years ended on Thursday night as the Truman Men's Basketball team dropped their first regular season home game since March 2, 2019 as they fell to Southern Indiana 80-66. Cade McKnight led the Bulldogs with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
McKnight scored the opening bucket with a three pointer, but USI scored nine straight to put Truman in an early hole. USI went ahead by as many as 12 at 25-13 with 9:39 to go, but a 9-2 run for the Bulldogs got them back in it. Masen Miller hit a three pointer, followed by McKnight and another one from Miller. With 3:46 to go in the half, Miller hit another three to put Truman up for the first time since 3-0 with a 32-31 lead. Hunter Strait hit a jumper and then Elijah Hazekamp drained two from the line to push Truman up three points, and then a three from Miller gave Truman their biggest lead at 39-36. USI got two foul shots to close the half and Truman led 39-36 at the intermission.
USI opened the second half on a 10-2 run, but Truman fought back with and 8-3 stretch to even the game up at 49. Strait opened the run with a three, followed by a jumper from Miller and then a three point play from McKnight evened it up. McKnight briefly gave Truman the lead at 51-49 with 14:31 remaining and then Keaton Mitchell got a dunk on a great find from McKnight just under a minute later, but from there USI took back the lead and Truman was not able to rally back for the rest of the game.
Miller joined McKnight in double figures with 16 points. Eric Northweather set a new career high with seven rebounds, and Josh Ollendieck also set a new career high with four boards.
Truman will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they take on McKendree in a rematch of a game three weeks ago in Lebanon, Ill., tip off at 3:15.
