KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Basketball team snapped a two game losing streak Saturday as they avenged an earlier loss at McKendree with a 78-63 win on their home court. The Bulldogs shot over 52.8% from the floor (28-53) and 90% from the line (18-20) to lead wire to wire in the win. Cade McKnight led Truman with 24 points while Elijah Hazekamp scored 22 and led Truman with eight rebounds.
On the opening possession of the game, a well positioned screen set up Trey Shearer for the three point basket. In his first start, Shearer dished out a career high four assists. A basket and two foul shots from McKnight put Truman up 7-2 early on. Each time that McKendree would come within a basket, Truman always had an answer. With 10:47 left in the half, Truman held an 18-14 lead and a 7-0 spurt pushed the lead to double digits. Eric Northweather got the run started with a layup and then Hazekamp drained a three and McKnight hit a jumper to make it 25-14. As the half wound down the Bulldogs would lead by as many as 20 as Hunter Strait put Truman up 42-22 with 40 seconds left in the half. Truman would lead 44-25 at the break, with a tip in from Hazekamp as the clock ran out in the half.
Early in the second, Truman pushed their lead up to 24 with three straight layups from McKnight, Northweather and McKnight again with 15:48 left in the game. Truman led by 20+ early in the half, but with the game 62-42 at the 10:21 mark, McKendree began a 9-0 run to make it an 11 point game. On the next possession a much needed dunk from Northweather, off a great feed from Masen Miller, brought the Bulldog crowd back into it. From there, Truman pushed the lead back to as many as 16 as they rolled to a 15 point win.
Monday the Bulldogs have another big game as conference leading Lewis comes to Pershing Arena, to play a game that was rescheduled due to covid. Lewis is 5-1 in GLVC play, which gives them the top winning percentage in the conference. Truman has seven wins, which is tied with Southwest Baptist and UMSL for the most wins. Tip off Monday will be at 6:00 pm.
