KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The University of Southern Indiana used a first quarter buzzsaw then strong free throw shooting down the stretch to end Truman State's 10-game winning streak 78-66 on Thursday night in Pershing Arena.
The Screaming Eagles (13-3; 7-1 GLVC) jumped out to an early 16-4 lead and were aided by eight Bulldog turnovers and 1-of-9 early shooting.
The Bulldogs (13-6; 9-2 GLVC) missed their first nine shots from beyond the arc until Brioenne Burns connected for the first of her five with a minute to go before halftime.
Burns connected on two more and Katey Klucking followed with another and cut the deficit below 10 points with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.
USI scored the first five to start the fourth but Truman was persistent and on Ellie Weltha's three-point play with 3:34 to play, the Bulldogs found themselves down five at 64-59.
Allison Thomas appeared to block a shot but was whistled for a foul on the next possession and Hannah Haithcock would convert at the free throw line.
That would be how things would end. Southern Indiana would go 12-of-12 from the free throw line to close the game, never allowing the Bulldogs to get closer than two possessions.
Burns scored a career-high with 17 points going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Burns accounted for five of the six made triples on the night for Truman. Weltha added 15 points and pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds and Hannah Belanger added 13 points, with seven coming at the line.
Haithcock and Ashlynn Brown paced USI with 17 points each. The Screaming Eagles dominated the paint 34-26 and were 14-7 in points off turnovers.
Truman will look to regroup and start a new streak when they host McKendree on Saturday in Pershing Arena. Scheduled tip off time is 1 p.m.
