INDIANAPOLIS—The Truman Men's Basketball team followed up their performance Thursday when they shot over 70% from the floor with another great performance from the floor Saturday—shooting 66.7% from the floor and 64.7% from three point range in their 89-73 win over the University of Indianapolis. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures as Masen Miller led with 22, joined by Cade McKnight with 19, Eric Northweather with 16 and Elijah Hazekamp with 14. Hazekamp led with five assists and tied with Northweather for the team lead with seven rebounds.
Truman got off to a hot start as they jumped out to a 13-4 lead just over four minutes in. Trey Shearer hit the opening basket from three point land, followed by a jumper from McKnight and then with a 5-4 lead Truman reeled off eight straight with McKnight hitting from downtown, then a layup from Northweather and then a triple from Hazekamp. At the 14:45 mark of the half, a three from Miller put Truman up double digits at 16-6 and from there Truman built their lead up to as many as 22 in the first half.
However, with 1:51 left in the half, UIndy had cut the lead down to just six at 42-36. But the Bulldogs responded with the last seven points of the frame with a layup from Northweather, three from Miller and a fast break layup from Dylan Peeters to cap a great half by the Bulldogs and send them to the intermission up 49-36.
Already holding a double digit lead, Truman scored five of the first seven points of the season half with Hazekamp hitting from two and from three to put Truman back up 16. UIndy cut the lead in half with an 8-0 run, but Hazekamp hit again to make it a ten point lead again. Each time that UIndy cut into the Truman lead, the Bulldogs had an answer. With 15:07 left, it was a nine point game but Truman scored nine straight to go back up 18. Northweather started the run with a layup and then hit a three followed by jumpers from Hazekamp and McKnight.
With 7:17 to go, Truman was up ten at 74-64, but UIndy hit back to back threes to make it a four point game with six and a half minutes to play. Miller hit two foul shots to bump the lead back up to six, and then McKnight scored four straight to put Truman back up ten. From there, Truman controlled the rest of the game and saw out the 16 point win. The Bulldogs have a 9-4 record in conference games before the release of the first GLVC ratings following the completion of Saturday's games. The conference rating system will be used to seed the GLVC Tournament; which will include all 15 teams this year.
The Bulldogs will return home next week as they host Quincy on Thursday night and then Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon.
