EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The Truman Baseball team was back on the diamond for the first time since April 3 as they headed east to take on Southern Indiana, and USI topped Truman 7-6 in 11 innings. Starter Zachry Schneider threw 6.2 innings and allowed six runs (only one earned) on six hits, getting a no decision while Holden Missey (1-1) took the loss and Carter Stamm (3-1) earned the win.
Truman scored the first three runs of the game, starting in the second. Will Fromm opened the inning with a double to right center and two straight groundouts moved him two bases in to score. Later in the top of the fourth, Fromm went yard to open the inning to make it 2-0. After two straight outs, Sam Smith singled to right center, then stole second. Simon Murray followed with a single, and on a bad throw Smith came in to score and make it 3-0.
USI scored the next six runs of the game, but in the top of the eighth Truman would tie the game up. Missey opened the inning being hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a walk drawn by Fromm. Dakota Spicer walked to load the bases with nobody out. With one out, Jack Darwin reached on a fielder's choice while Missey came in to score on an error. Murray came up next and reached on a fielder's choice, which brought Fromm in to score and make it 6-5. An error by the USI pitcher on a pickoff attempt allowed Spicer to come in and tie the game. Murray later stole second with two outs, but was later thrown out at third trying to steal and move the go ahead run 90 feet away from home.
Tucker Olson got a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth and then allowed two out single in the bottom of the ninth that was subsequently caught stealing to send the game to extras.
In the bottom of the tenth Missey took the mound for the Bulldogs and got into some trouble with a leadoff single that reached second but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat. In the 11th Dylan Thompson opened with a single up the middle and then was out of a fielder's choice from Murray. Tal Dean followed with a single to put two on with two out, but the Bulldogs couldn't bring in the go ahead run.
In the bottom of the 11th, a single with one out and then a stolen base set up the winning RBI single to left center that decided the game.
Tomorrow the teams will play a doubleheader, starting at two in the afternoon.
