KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—Following a sensational series opener on Friday the Truman Baseball team took on the Indianapolis Greyhounds in a doubleheader Friday and the Greyhounds took both of the seven inning games—game one 4-2 and game two 6-3. Brandon DeWitt (1-1) got the win in game one while Connor McKenna (3-4) took the loss. In game two Logan Peterson (2-2) got the win while Michael Daggett (1-7) took the loss.
Game One
UIndy got off to a quick start in the first as DeWitt, hitting in the leadoff spot, reached base and then was driven in on a two run shot to left form Caleb Vaughn. Zach Williams followed immediately with a solo shot to make it 3-0. Tal Dean led off the bottom of the first with single, then moved to second on a groundout and to third on an error with two outs. Dean then came in on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game.
Dakota Spicer, who had four hits on the day, singled to lead off the bottom of the second, then moved to second base on an error. He moved to third on a groundout but could not come the extra 90 feet to score.
McKenna settled into a groove and pitched well in the middle of the game, and got out of a jam in the fifth after the leadoff man reached on an error and then moved to third. Then in a wild play after a walk was issued Williams tried to distract the Bulldogs to allow DeWitt to score from third base but Dean caught onto the rouse and threw home to get DeWitt out.
Later in the bottom of the sixth, Holden Missey doubled to left and moved to third with only one out. But once again Truman left a runner 90 feet away.
In the seventh, Indy got a leadoff single and then moved to second on a sac bunt, stole third and then came in on an errant throw to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the inning, Truman had one last chance and Simon Murray walked with one out and moved up on a wild pitch and pass ball then came in on a Dean groundout to make it 4-2.
Game Two
With two outs in the first, with runners on first and second, a double to right center put two runs on the board for the Greyhounds. In the bottom of the first, Dean led off with a double and then Brennan Perkins singled through the left side to bring Dean in and make it 2-1.
Daggett got two straight 1-2-3 innings in the second and third, and got out of a jam in the fourth with runners on the corners with two outs. In the bottom of the frame Missey stole second after being hit by a pitch and then on a Spicer single Missey tried to tie the game but was thrown out.
In the top of the sixth Indy struck for four runs to make it 6-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Truman had one more chance and once again Spicer opened up with a single. He moved to second on fielder's indifference. Jack Owens walked, then Kevin Donohue pinch ran for him. Murray followed with a walk to load the bases. Dean singled to center to bring in two runs and make it 6-3, but the next out ended the game.
The two teams will finish the series tomorrow at noon.
