Spicer Delivers in the Bottom of the Ninth to Lift Bulldogs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Baseball team returned home for the first time in almost three weeks Friday as they hosted Quincy in the first of a four game set. Zachry Schneider pitched seven innings for Truman, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. But he did not get a decision as Holden Missey (2-1) got the win while Sam Stephens (0-5) took the loss.

Quincy got on the board first with a two run home run in the first inning, then went up 3-0 with a solo shot in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Brennan Perkins singled to lead off the inning. Missey followed with a single and Will Fromm flew out to move Perkins to third base. Dakota Spicer followed and hit a hard ball to third base, and the Hawks third baseman bobbled it and hesitated in the throw home; allowing Perkins to come in to score and make it 3-1.

Truman struck again in the bottom of the fifth as Simon Murray singled with two outs and then stole second. Tal Dean walked and then Luke Turner singled up the middle to bring Murray in to make it 3-2.

The Bulldogs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Quincy got out of the jam. In the top of the eighth, the Hawks loaded the bases but two straight strikeouts by Tucker Olson ended the inning.

Dylan Thompson hit a one out single and then advanced to second on a single by Sam Smith. Murray singled to bring Thompson in and even the game at three. Kevin Donohue pinch ran for Smith at second base, moved to third on a single by Dean and then scored on a sac fly to give Truman a 4-3 lead.

In the ninth, Quincy tied the game at four and had the bases loaded with one out. But Missey got a popout and lineout to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Missey walked to lead off the inning. He was the last batter that Stephens would face. Fromm bunted to move Missey to second and then Spicer doubled to right field to drive Missey in for the winning run.

The two will resume the series tomorrow at 1 PM with a doubleheader.
