KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—Holden Missey had one the greatest days at the plate in Truman baseball history Friday as he tied four program single game records—five hits in a game, five runs scored in a game, 15 total bases in one game and three home runs in a game. Overall the team had 18 hits, a mark that they have reached six times previously, and defeated the Lewis Flyers 13-6 to start the four game set. Zachry Schneider (4-3) threw seven innings and got the win while Michael Sclafani (2-6) took the loss. For only the sixth time in program history the Bulldogs had four or more home runs in a single game as Dylan Thompson also launched one over the wall.
After Lewis went up 1-0 in the top of the first, Truman took over after that. Missey led off the second with a single up the middle, then Will Fromm and Dakota Spicer followed with singles to load the bases. Dylan Thompson singled to right to bring in the first run of the game for the Bulldogs, then Sam Smith doubled to bring two more in and make it 3-1.
Missey hit his first homer in the third inning to make it 4-1, then hit his second in the fifth to make it 6-1 after Brennan Perkins had gotten on with a leadoff double.
Lewis got three in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-4 game, then in the bottom of the frame Thompson led off with a solo shot. Later Luke Turner was hit by a pitch and Brennan Perkins doubled to bring Turner in and make it 8-4.
In the bottom of the seventh Truman struick again as Missey led off with a double and then came in on a single by Spicer. With two outs, Smith hit a single up the middle to bring Fromm in, who had walked earlier in the inning. Smith then stole second and then came in on a double by Tal Dean, who came in to score as Luke Turner followed with a double to make it 12-4.
Lewis scored two runs in the top of the eighth, and then Missey launched a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth to finish out the scoring.
Missey now has 12 home runs this season, which ties him with Rick Resh for second best in a single season in program history. Moreover, the team has now set a new program record with 38 long balls as a team this season. They had been tied for the record with 34 in 1983 and 1993 but have now set a new high mark.
The Bulldogs will continue their series with the Flyers tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm--weather permitting.
