SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—The Truman Baseball team finished its 2022 campaign with two losses to Illinois-Springfield Sunday, falling 11-0 in game one and 15-2 in game two. In the first game Cameron Zunkel (4-0) got the win while Michael Daggett (2-10) took the loss, and in game two Alex Leary (3-8) took the loss while Seth Masters (4-1) got the win.
In game one the Prairie Stars got on the board early and kept the Bulldogs from getting anything going as they won with a second consecutive shutout.
In game two the Bulldogs got on the board first as Brennan Perkins reached with a two out double in the first and then Jack Owens followed with an RBI single to bring Perkins home. The lead would be short lived as UIS struck for five in the bottom of the frame and reeled off 15 straight runs. Truman got one more run in the top of the sixth as Tal Dean scored from second on an RBI single by Perkins.
The Bulldogs finish the season 18-32, the most wins in a campaign since 2017—when the team also won 18 games.
This season Zachry Schneider was one of the top starters in the GLVC with a 2.90 ERA (eighth lowest in a season in program history, also fifth lowest in the GLVC) and 4-3 record, the team was 7-5 in games he started. His 80.2 innings pitched were second in the GLVC, and he led conference in runners picked off with four.
Holden Missey started all 50 games for the Bulldogs, leading the team in batting average (.361), hits (61), doubles (17—third most in a single season in team history) and home runs (13—second most in a single season in team history); and on the mound his six saves tied with Peter Young in 2015 for the third most saves in a single season (which was second most in the GLVC).
Brennan Perkins was second in average at .339 and had 20 extra base hits and led the team with 40 RBI (eighth most in team history).
This season Dan Davis moved up to 232 wins as the Bulldog skipper, six short of tying Sam Nugent for the most in program history.
With most of a young team coming back next spring, the Bulldogs are in good shape heading into 2023.
