Truman State Baseball Signs 11 Players

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State baseball signed 11 players to the 2023 class as announced by Head Coach Dan Davis. Charlie Berry (Wildwood, Mo.), Charlie Burt (Creve Coeur, Mo.), Oliver Degenhardt (St. Louis, Mo.), Dakota Joggerst (Eureka, Mo.), Thomas Krock (Murrieta, Calif.), Warner Lenahan (Chesterfield, Mo.), Colin Mueth (Belleville, Ill.), Jack Pearson (Warson Woods, Mo.), Evan Still (Lee's Summit, Mo.), Kyle Stratman (Lee's Summit, Mo.), and Ian Thornton (Brentwood, Mo) all signed a National Letter of Intent.

“This is an extremely important recruiting class for our program," said Head Coach Dan Davis. "We will be losing 14 seniors after the 2024 season and need to make sure we have a good class who will compete for playing time while learning from that group.  I would like to thank my assistant coach Tyler Hudlow for his efforts in recruiting this group.”

Charlie Berry (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette HS)

Berry put together two solid seasons in 2021 and 2022, hitting .393 in the 2021 summer, .296 in high school play, and .350 in the summer of 2022. He was named Academic All-State in 2022 and won Lafayette High School's Scholar Athlete award.

Lafayette Coach Cole DuPont on Berry:  “Charlie brings leadership and passion every day. His consistent work ethic sets the standard for every player in our program. Charlie has a bright future ahead of him and we are all excited to watch. Truman State is getting a good one.”

Berry on why he chose Truman “I chose Truman because it was the perfect fit for me academically, and when I got my opportunity to visit the campus and meet the team I instantly connected with the players and coaching staff and knew I wanted Truman to be my future home!”

Coach Dan Davis on Berry: "Charlie is a middle infielder we saw at a showcase after his sophomore year in high school. He was a smaller guy who played big with the upper classmen. He showed absolutely no fear when hitting against the older guys. He has a knack for hitting barrel and he plays with fire and passion. We loved him from the first time we saw him and can't wait to watch him grow and compete in a Bulldog uniform!"

Charlie Burt (Creve Coeur, Mo./Chaminade College Prep)

A three-year varsity player, Charlie Burt had a phenomenal junior season with Chaminade College Prep. Burt hit .320 and was selected to the All-Metro team. He volunteers at Loaves to Fishes Homeless Shelter and Trinity Christian Assembly of God church, and is a two-time Honor Roll member.

Chaminade Prep Coach Chris Chiburis on Burt:  “Charlie is a 3 year varsity starter, he is solid behind the plate with a good arm and great defensive skills, hits for power to all fields, and is a leader with the staff and in the dugout.”

Burt on why he chose Truman“One of my good baseball friends Charlie Berry who is also going to Truman with me put the idea of Truman Baseball into my head. Ever since I have talked to the coach from day 1 I have known that Truman was going to be my future home. The real reason I choose Truman is because of the Brotherhood aspect that not only the baseball team poses but also in the school and teachers. This is very important to me and I think that Truman does a great job at it. I cannot wait to get up to campus next fall and get to work, meet the team, and win a title. I would like to end this with a thanks to the coaching staff and everyone who has believed in me along the way.”

Coach Dan Davis on Burt: "We saw Charlie a couple of times this summer and we really liked him. He's a tough-nosed catcher who can hit for some power and can control the running game. He's a high energy catcher who works hard and loves the game. It's going to be fun watching Charlie grow in the program!"

Oliver Degenhardt (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney HS)

Degenhardt hit .340, with a .413 OPB, and 25 runs batted in, which led to All-Metro Catholic Conference First Team Infield in 2022. His club team was the STL Prospects, and his community service includes the St. John Vianney School Ambassador Program, Special Olympics Volunteer-Buddy Program, and he prepared sandwiches for the Trinity Lutheran Church Community Care program.

Vianney Coach Dave Stewart on Degenhardt:  “It is my pleasure to have the ability to write this statement for Oliver Degenhardt. Oliver is truly a great young man, student, baseball player, and leader. He will be a great asset to Truman State University and its athletic program.”

Degenhardt on why he chose Truman “I chose Truman based on the academic reputation and the positive feel I got when walking around campus.  Meeting Coach Davis and working out with the baseball team sealed the deal for me.”

Coach Dan Davis on Degenhardt: "We heard about Oliver late in the fall and had him come in for a visit and workout with the team. We fell in love with the way he played the game.  He's a very athletic infielder who is a defensive wonder, he has great feet and hands, a good arm, and can really run.  He hits for a high average and has will create some havoc on the bases. We think Oliver can compete to play shortstop the day he arrives on campus. We are looking forward to watching Oliver compete for the Bulldogs!"

Dakota Joggerst (Eureka, Mo./Eureka HS)

Joggerst was fantastic at the plate in 2022, hitting .373 with 38 hits, four doubles, a triple, and 22 runs batted in in the spring, and hitting .440 with 40 hits, 10 doubles, and six triples in the summer. His accolades include first-team All-Conference, second-team All-District, and Gold Glove team at third base. He was Academic All-State and his intended major is business.

Eureka Coach James Daffron on Joggerst:  “Dakota Joggerst has been a starting baseball player in the Eureka program for the past 4 years, 2 on the varsity. Dakota is one of the best contact hitters I have ever coached. He is also one of the best 2 strike hitters I have ever seen come through the baseball program also. It is very rare to see Dakota strike out. The ball is always put in play with a hit as a result most of the time. He is your classic hard nose third basemen that will keep everything in front of him to be able to throw a runner out. Off the field he has outstanding grades and gets along with all students and staff members. Always willing to to offer a helping hand in the community and to others. Dakota is one of the special young men that come around that you will miss and talk positive about to all your future teams.”

Joggerst on why he chose Truman “I felt an instant connection to the team and the coaching staff when I visited and it felt like home to me.”

Coach Dan Davis on Joggerst: "We heard about Dakota from a baseball colleague and decided to take a look. We fell in love with the way he played the game. He's a very athletic infielder who hits from the left side.  He hits for a high average and has some juice to go with it. We think Dakota can help shore up the left side of our infield in the future. We are looking forward to watching Dakota compete for the Bulldogs!"

Thomas Krock (Murrieta, Calif./Method Schools)

Playing for the Rawlings Tigers Riverside, part of one of the best travel baseball programs in the country, Krock excelled. He was named to the Rawlings Tigers National Team, Perfect Game All-Team, and named All-Tournament for Pathway.

Tigers Coach Chris Horowitz on Krock “Truman State Bulldogs got themselves a perfect storm. Tough as nails and always humbled by the purity of the game.  Most players check a couple of boxes but this one doesn’t realize he checks boxes beyond the game and that’s what makes the good ones great.”

Krock on why he chose Truman “I picked Truman because of the location.  Also, I adored the campus.  I want to play Bulldog Baseball because I knew that the coaches and players would be able to accelerate my baseball career.”

Coach Dan Davis on Krock: "We heard about Tommy from coach Horowitz. He was making a trip to Missouri to visit another school and he came to workout with our guys. Our guys loved him immediately! Tommy can really swing the bat. We think he'll have a chance to be a middle of the order bat as a true freshman. He can play a couple of positions which should give him more opportunities to play immediately. We look forward to Tommy joining the program!"

Warner Lenahan (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette HS)

Lenahan was named first-team All-Conference, first-team All-District, and Academic All-State in 2022 at Marquette High School. Warner is a three-year volunteer member of the Young Men's Service League that assists, serves, and supports people in need in his community. He also clocked in more than 100 service hours to Challenger Baseball, programs for veterans, Rock Steady Boxing, and the Red Cross.

Marquette Coach John Meyer on Lenahan:  “Warner made a great decision for his academic and athletic career moving forward. He will be able to make an impact on the baseball field and will get a top notch academic experience. Truman is a great fit and his best baseball is still ahead of him.”

Lenahan on why he chose TrumanI chose Truman state because I love the baseball program and it offers a great education.

Coach Dan Davis on Lenahan: ""We saw Warner at a showcase at the end of the summer and we liked him right away. He's a big man who has a big arm. He's got the chance to grow and develop even more in our program. We're excited to watch Warner compete as a Bulldog!"

Colin Mueth (Belleville, Ill./St. John Vianney HS)

Mueth was a member of the St. John Vianney varsity baseball team, and played for MOCO drive for club ball. Academically, Mueth was a member of National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, as well as being on the Honor Roll for three years. Outside of school, Colin helped with the Junior Social Service Project, and Blood Apostle. He volunteers at blood drives, the Special Olympics, baseball camps, and is the leader of Link Crew.

Vianney Coach Dave Stewart on Mueth “It is my pleasure to have the ability to write this statement for Colin Mueth. Colin is truly a great young man, student, baseball player, and leader. He will be a great asset to Truman State University and its athletic program.”

Mueth on why he chose Truman “I chose Truman State because of the incredibly positive experience I had while touring campus and working out with the baseball team. The atmosphere among the players and coaching staff was incredible and I cannot wait to be a part of this winning culture.

Coach Dan Davis on Mueth: "We learned about Colin through coach Stewart mid-Fall. He came to visit/workout with the team and our coaching staff and current roster loved him. He's a fast outfielder who can cover ground and hits from the left side. He's an on-base machine who should score a ton of runs for the Bulldogs. We look forward to watching him play for the Bulldogs!"

Jack Pearson (Warson Woods, Mo./Kirkwood HS))

Being No. 1 pitcher and first baseman for Kirkwood High School the last two seasons, Pearson excelled on the mound and at the plate. He threw 46.1 innings with 41 strikeouts, good for a 3.15 ERA. Pearson hit .356 with five home runs, six doubles, and 26 runs batted in. He has started varsity since his freshman season, and plays for Adidas Athletics for club ball. Jack volunteered for Kirkwood baseball camps, was a volunteer coach for low-income baseball teams with Adidas Academy, volunteer softball manager, volunteer bible school counselor at Parkway United Church of Christ, counselor for Lydia Fox Memorial, helped design and sell sweatshirts to raise teen suicide awareness, and started "Strait Lines Fair Prices" lawn mowing/snow removal.

Kirkwood Coach Scott Weissman on Pearson:  “Jack has been a #1 pitcher and 1st baseman for Kirkwood High School for the past two years.   His work ethic and desire to compete are both very high.  Jack put in the time, the effort and the sacrifice to attain his goals and be a terrific role model for his teammates.  He is a quick learner and understands the concepts to meet the expectations set for both himself and his teammates.”

Pearson on why he chose Truman “The reason I chose Truman State is that they have the best opportunity for me for both baseball and academics.  Truman State also has a great campus and it’s value as a highly ranked school at an affordable price.

Coach Dan Davis on Pearson: "We saw Jack at a tournament this summer. He is a giant man who has some serious power at the plate. As a bonus, he's also a left-handed pitcher. We love the way he plays and can't wait to see him in the batter's box competing for the Bulldogs!"

Evan Still (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS)

Still is a 6'1", 210-pound, left-handed pitcher who plays for Lee's Summit West High School and Building Champions during club season. He is a member of National Honor Society and Titan Legacy Club. Still's intended major is health science/business at Truman State.

Lee’s Summit West Coach Jay Meyer on Still “Evan is a student-athlete who works very hard at making himself a better ball player and teammate every year.  He has a very competitive personality that makes him a quality addition to any program and is all-in always.  I very happy for him finding a home at Truman State.”

Still on why he chose Truman “As soon as I went on my first visit, I knew that Truman State University was the college for me. I loved everything about it: the campus, the educational opportunities, and especially the baseball team. It felt like home.

Coach Dan Davis on Still: "We had the opportunity to watch Evan pitch a few times this summer and liked him more every time we saw him. He's a big, solid man who knows how to pitch. He can command his fastball very well and can spin the breaking ball. He fits our type of person in the program, gritty and hard-working, and we look forward to seeing him in Bulldog purple!"

Kyle Stratman (Lee's Summit, Mo./North Central Missouri College)

Stratman is joining Truman State from North Central Missouri College in Trenton, Mo. where he threw 20.1 innings for a 2-2 record in 2022. He recorded two saves with a 12.39 K/9. Stratman was named an NJCAA Academic All-American and plans to major in physical therapy.

NCMC Coach Donnie Hillerman on Stratman:  “Kyle is a hard-working competitor who is a student of the game. He has been an asset to the NCMC program on and off the field. I know that I speak for the entire NCMC staff when I say that we are very proud of Kyle and his decision to continue his career and education at Truman State with Coach Davis.”

Stratman on why he chose Truman “Truman has a great academic reputation and exercise science program.

Coach Dan Davis on Stratman: "Kyle came to our Fall Prospect Camp in 2019, he needed some work to be able to compete for us. He went to NCMC to develop as a pitcher and he's done just that. His tireless work ethic has propelled his success and development. Coach Hudlow was high on Kyle and when he threw against us in a fall scrimmage, we knew he would be a big part of our pitching staff moving forward. We look forward to seeing Kyle pitch for the Bulldogs!"

Ian Thornton (Brentwood, Mo./Brentwood HS)

Thornton excels not only on the diamond, but on the hardwood as well, being a three-time first-team All-Conference player in both sports. Brentwood Coach Andrew Baxter on Thornton:  “Ian is an exemplary young man who has accomplished many things in his time at Brentwood. His ability and willingness to play any position to help the team has been vital to the growth of our baseball program. I look forward to watching Ian continue to grow at the next level.”

Thornton on why he chose TrumanI chose Truman because of the great campus life I heard about on the tour and the educational opportunities the school has. I also really enjoyed the team workout and the players on the team.

Coach Dan Davis on Thornton: "We saw Ian last summer at a tournament with his club team. After seeing him a few times, we just kept thinking that we need this guy on our team. He's a true utility guy who can play the infield and outfield.  We like his versatility and his approach at the plate. He's a kid who can do some damage at the plate and we can't wait to watch him compete for the Bulldogs!"
