Truman State Baseball Finishes 1-3 Against UMSL

The Truman State baseball team traveled to St. Louis this weekend for a four-game GLVC series against Missouri-St. Louis, going 1-3 in a competitive weekend that featured plenty of back-and-forth action and strong individual contributions from several Bulldogs.

Game 1: March 13 | L, 11-12

The series opener was the most dramatic game of the weekend, a nine-inning affair that Truman nearly pulled off. The Bulldogs struck first when Tyler Tieman grounded out to plate Nick Steurer in the first, but UMSL answered with a five-run second inning featuring RBI contributions from Terhaar, Strenger, Bonczkowski, Randle, and Faith to take a 5-1 lead. Truman chipped away, with Oliver Degenhardt's sacrifice fly in the third making it 5-2, and Shodai Nishihara delivering a two-run double in the fourth to pull the Bulldogs within one at 5-4. UMSL pushed back to 7-4, but Truman erupted for three runs in the fifth on a Degenhardt RBI groundout and a two-run Joey Fentress double to center to tie the game at seven. The Bulldogs then took their first lead of the game in the sixth, scoring three times capped by an Evan Davis two-run single to make it 10-8. UMSL tied it with two in the bottom of the sixth, then took the lead for good in the seventh on back-to-back RBI by Faith and Terhaar. Fentress doubled home Degenhardt in the eighth to make it 11-12, but Truman couldn't complete the comeback. Fentress had two doubles and three RBI, Davis drove in two, and Nishihara added two RBI. Jaxon Markham scored three times and drew three walks.

Game 2: March 13 | L, 1-5

The nightcap was a tough, low-scoring loss in which Caden Carroll pitched well but couldn't get enough offensive support. Carroll worked five and a third innings, holding UMSL to three earned runs. The Bulldogs' only run came in the third when Tyler Towe scored on an Evan Davis sacrifice fly after reaching on a walk. UMSL broke the game open in the sixth on a Terhaar RBI single and a Strenger two-run double that turned a one-run game into a 5-1 deficit Truman couldn't overcome. Tyler Tieman doubled in the first and collected two hits on the day.

Game 3: March 14 | W, 6-4

Truman picked up its lone win of the series in Saturday's opener behind a complete-game effort from Nick Phillips, who went all seven innings, struck out six, and allowed four runs. The Bulldogs wasted no time, scoring in the first on a Tieman RBI groundout, then extending the lead to 2-0 in the second when Fentress launched a solo home run to left field. Truman pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third when a Degenhardt steal and throwing error by the UMSL catcher brought home two runs at once. Nishihara added a solo home run in the fourth to make it 5-0, and Davis singled home Steurer in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-0. UMSL scored three times in the sixth on a Landis two-run single and a Grevengoed RBI single to trim it to 6-4, but Phillips held on from there to secure the win.

Game 4: March 14 | L, 4-14

The series finale was a tough outing for the Bulldogs, with UMSL scoring in bunches and pulling away for a 14-4 win. Truman managed to tie the game at four after three innings, as Steurer and Degenhardt each had RBI singles in the third to go with a Gavin Schieffer solo home run in the fourth. But UMSL's offense erupted for six runs in the fifth on home runs by Johnson and Faith, and Bonczkowski's home run in the sixth extended the lead further. Schieffer homered and drove in a run, Reed Drabant collected two hits and an RBI, and Markham doubled. Alex Wittenauer threw two clean innings in relief.

Up Next:
Truman finishes the series 1-3 and stands at 7-14 overall, 1-7 in GLVC play. The win in Game 3 behind Phillips was an encouraging sign, and Fentress continued his strong season with key hits across the weekend. The Bulldogs will look to build on Saturday's first game as conference play continues. Truman State will return home for a weekend series against Missouri S&T starting on Friday, March 20th at 3:00 PM. Saturday will feature a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM, and the fourth and final game of the series will take place on Sunday at noon.
