KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Concordia-St. Paul's Ally Gietzel picked off a pass, drove to the free throw line and buried the pull up jumper as time expired to give the Golden Bears a 74-72 win over the Truman State Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
Concordia scored the first eight points of the game and fended off the Bulldogs for nearly 39 minutes before Truman grabbed their first lead on a pair of free throws by Molly Joyce at 72-71.Â
Leah Dengerud made one of two free throw attempts on Concordia's next possession that featured three Bulldog fouls, to tie the game at 72.Â
Truman was whistled for an offensive foul with 28 seconds left and it appeared that Concordia would be able to play for the last shot.Â
However, on the inbounds play, Claire Rake was able to sneak in and tie up the ball near mid-court and the possession arrow favored the Bulldogs giving them the last shot.
The clocked ticked down and the Bulldogs attempted a bounce pass into a cutting player for a layup but Gietzel stepped in front of it, grabbed the ball and dribbled down the floor before hoisting the winning shot at the buzzer.
Only four players scored for Concordia led by Lauren Wilson's 26 points on 9-of-11 shooting.Â
For the Bulldogs, all nine players that played scored with Ellie Weltha and Claire Rake leading with 15 points each. Ainsley Tolson added 13 and Joyce scored 11.Â
Truman will next play in the Thanksgiving Classic in Springfield, Missouri and hosted by Drury University on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will face Lincoln (Mo.) and Davenport (Mich.) in the two games with both tipping off at 1 p.m.Â
