KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman State Softball team will head into the off season on a positive note with a doubleheader sweep over William Jewell on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs more than doubled their win totals in both overall and conference wins at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
The Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 in game one before scoring nine runs in the third and fourth innings to win the opener 12-3. In game two, Truman put up a five-spot in the bottom of the first and never looked back as they defeated the Cardinals 10-3 to complete the sweep. Truman finished the season under first year Head Coach Ron Ferrill 17-37 and 7-17 in the GLVC, up from 8-35 and 3-25 (GLVC) a season ago.
Seniors
Emily Eberwine and
Lauren Stade had big days at the plate. Eberwine went 4-for-6 on the afternoon with a pair of runs batted in and Stade went a perfect 4-for-4. The other seniors also contributed with solid games.
Macy Taylor had three hits including a double,
Maria McGonegle had three hits and a double,
Callie Unrein had a pair of doubles with a single and stolen base,
McKenzie West reached base four times with a double and home run and
Annabel Zimmer was the winning pitcher in the opener, throwing all five innings and striking out four Cardinals.
Breianna Klein pitched a complete game in the finale going all seven and limiting William Jewell to four hits with five strikeouts.
Truman ended the season with 103 stolen bases, up from only 23 in 2022. Junior
Alex Beard led the team in hitting with a .347 average in 51 games played and had a team-high 33 runs batted in. Freshman
Cassie Smith hit .364 in 32 games and was the stolen base leader with 21. Zimmer and Klein each threw over 130 innings on the season and each had over 80 registered strikeouts.
