SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Trey Shearer scored eight straight Bulldog points in clutch time as the Truman State Bulldogs picked up a big road win at Illinois Springfield 81-77 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs led 44-38 at half and expanded to their largest margin of 57-45 early in the second, however they had to push through some cold shooting and a Prairie Star run.
Kobi Williams knocked down a triple midway through the second but the Bulldogs then hit just one of their next 10 field goal attempts and the lead whittled down.
A three-pointer by Jayden Johnson cut the margin to three with over five minutes left but that's when Shearer took over the Bulldog scoring. He was able to answer the Prairie Stars step-for-step and with the Bulldogs clinging to a 74-73 advantage, Shearer hit a running layup with 1:53 followed by a jumper from the elbow of the lane with 59 seconds showing to make it a five-point game.Â
Williams and Xavier Hall knocked down free throws to secure the win.
UIS struggled mightily from the line with 10-of-21 for 47.6%.
Williams led all scorers with 19 with four three-pointers, Landon Eiland finished with 17, Hall 15 and Shearer closed with 13.
The Bulldogs are now 2-4 in the GLVC and will be the second half of a doubleheader with the women's team on Thursday at home against Southwest Baptist (Mo.).
