Softball Sweeps Southwest Minnesota On Monday

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - The Truman State Softball team earned the doubleheader sweep over Southwest Minnesota State on Monday with wins of 5-3 and 5-4. The team continues their busy month on Thursday with the start of the Rosemont Dome Invitational with seven games from Thursday through Sunday.

In game one, the first four Bulldog hitters went a combine 7-for-14 and drove in four of the five runs in the 5-3 win.

Emily Wood led off the home half of the first with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. She would score on a double from Cameryn Patterson. Cassie Smith plated Madi McCarty with a two-out single in the second for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.

The Mustangs tied the game in the fourth on a two-run single but the Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth. Wood and Smith hit with two outs to score the runs and put Truman up 4-2.

Abbie Danchus added an insurance run in the fifth with another two-out RBI single that scored Ryleigh Jones.

Southwest Minnesota threatened in the sixth as they loaded the bases but managed only one run in the fray.

Wood went 3-for-4, Smith was 2-for-3 as was Charlotte Chelich and Madi McCarty. Madie Anderson earned the win.

In game two, the Bulldogs scored the first three runs without putting a ball in play. After the first two hitters were retired, Brooke Nutter, Nina Fenasci and Ryleigh Jones all coaxed walks to load the bases. Madi McCarty and Emily Wood followed with bases on balls, five straight walks for the first two runs and Cassie Smith was hit by a pitch for the third RBI of the inning.

The Bulldogs first hit was in the fourth on a solo home run to lead off the inning by Fenasci and later in the frame, Wood belted one over the fence to put Truman up 5-0.

The Mustangs scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap and crept closer with a two-out double in the fifth that made the score 5-4.

A double-play got Truman out of the sixth.

In the seventh, Southwest Minnesota had a runner at second with two outs and Ron Ferrill went back to his pen for Nutter. The sophomore got the final out as the Mustang player laced a liner towards short that was snared by Patterson for the final out of the inning. Patterson had just moved from third to short at the start of the inning.
