KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The 117th edition of the Truman State University Football team will take the field on Saturday when they open the 2024 season against Findlay (Ohio) University. Kickoff is scheduled for noon and both teams received votes in the initial American Football Coaches Association preseason Division II poll.

The two teams met for the first time ever in 2023 with the Bulldogs shutting out the Oilers in the second half to win 20-10. Nolan Hair threw two touchdown passes, including a 66-yard catch and run to Mason Huskey early in the second half to break a 10-10 tie. Grant Ross added a 42-yard field goal. Isaiah Estes and Peyton Carr each had second half interceptions in helping the defense secure the win.

The Bulldogs were 9-2 last season and won all four non-conference games in 2023. Findlay posted a 7-4 overall mark. Truman was picked to place second in the GLVC preseason coaches poll behind defending champion, Indianapolis while Findlay was tabbed as the favorites to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship.

About the Bulldogs:
The Bulldogs will be under the leadership of Kellen Nesbitt, who takes over for his father Gregg after 14 seasons serving as assistant coach/defensive coordinator. Nesbitt elevated longtime defensive line coach Jeremey Dockery to the DC position and brought in former All-American defensive back Austin Zoda to take over the role of offensive coordinator. Zoda had been on the offensive side of the ball during his stint at Fort Hays State University.

Greg Hardin (Wide Receivers), Harrison Beemiller (Linebackers) and Clay Marshall (Offensive Line) join returning assistant coach John Dabney (Running Backs) to complete Nesbitt's first staff at the school.

The bulk of the 2024 squad's returning starters will be on the defensive side of the ball, with eight players bringing significant experience to a unit that has limited opponents to under 20 points per game the last three seasons. Seven returning all-GLVC players are among those starters, including Ulysses Ross (LB), Jake Closser (DB), Peyton Carr (DB), Thomas Spaulding (DL), Jack Weltha (DL), and Ben Miller (DL).

Last year, Truman's defense held the opposition to 17.1 points per game with 275 yards of total offense per outing (101.6 rush/173.4 pass).

Much of the "newness" will be seen on the offense. Dylan Hair is expected to take the field as the starting quarterback on Saturday after backing up his older brother Nolan last year. Dylan took snaps in seven games last season and was used primarily as a runner, with 61 yards on 17 attempts. Bennett Ellsworth is listed as the backup and took snaps in two games last year. Neither Hair or Ellsworth completed a pass out of their four attempts.

Denim Cook and Jack Butchko will lead the running attack. Cook had an outstanding freshman season backing up Shamar Griffith in 2022 with 193 yards and five touchdowns. Last year, an early season injury put Cook again into the backup role and he managed 271 yards on 56 attempts. Butchko has been a two-year player with 34 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Christopher Kerr was named an all-GLVC tight end a year ago after catching 23 passes for 269 yards last year. Kerr is a three-year starter with over 60 catches and over 600 yards receiving with seven touchdowns. Noah Copeland made 14 catches for 157 yards last season. Jackson Overton and Joseph Spaulding are expected to start at receiver positions on Saturday.

The offensive line has two veterans and three redshirt freshmen to start the season. Kody Klingensmith (LT) and Houston Eagan (RG) will anchor the line with Mike Barretto (LG), Wyatt Bonnett (C) and Greg Krupa (RT) will be thrust into action. All three did get in last year under the new NCAA redshirt rule of three games or less to preserve the redshirt season.

On special teams, Vinnie Calvaruso will handle all of the kicking duties after being used for just kickoffs last season. Calvaruso averaged 53.1 per kickoff with five touchbacks. Mason Gessert returns at the punter after averaging 33.6 yards on 37 boots in 2023. Robert Lemaster returns for his second season as long snapper with Joseph Spaulding, Jack Butchko, and Jake Closser handling the return duties.

Up Next:
Truman will have their showdown with Indianapolis next week on the road. The teams had played in November in four of the past five fall seasons with the exception of last year's October 14th game in Kirksville. The Greyhounds won 38-17 at Stokes Stadium in 2023. Kickofff from UINDY is slated for 6 p.m. (eastern time).
