INDIANAPOLIS — Right place, right time. Drew Kingery's offensive rebound putback with 7.7 seconds left gave the Truman State men's basketball team a critical 78-76 victory over the University of Indianapolis on Thursday night.
Kingery, who made his collegiate debut just a week ago, started and played 31 minutes, scoring 12 points, including the game-winner. The basket came on an offensive rebound after Xavier Hall's driving layup was blocked by the Greyhounds in a wild final minute.
The Bulldogs led by nine, 72-63, with 3:32 remaining, but UIndy chipped away, cutting the lead to 73-72 with 1:35 left. A steal along the sideline sparked a fast-break bucket for the Greyhounds, giving them their first lead in 25 minutes of game action.
On the next possession, Hall calmly sank a 3-pointer to put Truman State back on top. After a timeout, a defensive lapse allowed an uncontested layup by UIndy's Dashawn Jackson, tying the score at 76.
With the shot clock and game clock winding down, Hall drove to the right side of the hoop but was denied by two UIndy defenders. The ball fell to Kingery, who laid it in for the lead.
UIndy had one final chance. Jackson drove down the left side of the lane, but his bank shot spun out as the clock hit zero, securing the road win for Truman State.
Hall finished with 25 points, while Trey Shearer added 21, going 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.
The victory clinched the Bulldogs' spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament. Seeding remains undecided until Saturday's regular-season finales. Truman State will host William Jewell at Pershing Arena for its final game, tipping off after the women's game and Senior Day festivities.
