KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – William Jewell erased an 18-point deficit and scored the winning basket with 12 seconds left to spoil Senior Day at Truman State, defeating the Bulldogs 70-69.
The Bulldogs led 35-26 at halftime and extended their lead to 49-31 with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter.
The Cardinals mounted a 21-4 run to close the gap to 53-52 and tied the game at 57 with 6:45 left.
Molly Joyce's three-point play put Truman State ahead by five at the 2:35 mark, but Jewell fought back. A three-pointer from Kirsten Hauck narrowed it to 69-68 with a minute remaining.
Truman State came up empty on their next possession in an attempt to extend the lead, and Jewell capitalized. After calling a timeout, they set up a driving layup by Kate Hillyer with 10.8 seconds left.
On the Bulldogs' final chance, Joyce took a 10-foot shot, but the ball bounced off the rim and fell away.
Jordan Cunningham led the Bulldogs with 19 points, Joyce finished with 13, and
Tori Standefer added 12.
Truman State will learn their seeding for the upcoming GLVC postseason tournament and will most likely open play on Thursday evening.
