LIBERTY, Mo. – A six-run Bulldog fifth was not enough as Truman State falls at William Jewell (Mo.), 14-7, in Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball action.
The win completed a four-game Cardinal sweep where Truman State pitching struggled surrendering 12 home runs and 23 walks. Sunday's game saw William Jewell hit three round trippers while being issued ten free passes while scoring double digit runs for the third time in the series. First inning trouble continued for the Bulldogs after three runs scored on a walk and two hit by pitches with the bases loaded for the third of four games where the Cardinals had a lead after one inning.
Truman State responded in the second with a solo home run by
Luke Roussel, his second in as many games, to narrow the gap to 3-1. Down 6-1 in the fifth,
Charlie Berry and
Rawlins Brant got things going with consecutive singles with both scoring, Brant all the way from first, on a 2-RBI double by
Oliver Degenhardt.
Dakota Joggerst plated Degenhardt with a single then scored on a double from
Tyler Tieman. Roussel kept the rally going with a two-out walk, and Tieman and Roussel closed out scoring for the Bulldogs on a
Reed Drabant hit, Bulldogs ahead 7-6.
Noah Frailey pitched a clean fifth inning, one of two frames where the 'Dogs kept the Cardinals off the board but surrendered a solo shot in the sixth to knot things 7-7. William Jewell scored five runs in the seventh to retake the lead and tacked on two in the eighth to reach the 14-7 final.
Tieman went 3-4 with the double and a walk while Degenhardt went 2-5 and tied Drabant with two RBI. Starter
Warner Lenahan went 3.2 innings giving up six runs on five hits.
The Bulldogs finish the weekend 4-19 overall, 1-7 GLVC, while William Jewell goes to 12-12, 5-7 GLVC. Truman State plays host to Southwest Baptist (Mo.) March 28-30 in a four-game GLVC series.
