Softball Starts Conference Season With A Sweep Over Illinois Springfield

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State Softball team powered and pitched their way to a conference-opening sweep over the University of Illinois Springfield on Friday. The Bulldogs took the first game 6-1 and the nightcap 9-3. The team returns to action on Sunday against McKendree in Lebanon, Illinois.

The Bulldogs wasted little time, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Avaree Taylor knocked a run-scoring single to score Maddie Hickman, and Caragan Baker brought in Emily Wood on a sacrifice fly.

Kyleia Salyars scored Baker with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 3-0.

UIS got that run back in their half of the fifth, but Truman State responded with a three-run bottom of the inning. Hickman singled and later scored on a double by Wood, and Baker plated Wood with a double to left center. The third run came in on a wild pitch third strike, with Ryleigh Jones touching the plate.

Kaylyn Jones tossed the complete game with four strikeouts to move to 7-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs spotted UIS a 2-0 lead in game two, then used the long ball to smother the Prairie Stars 9-3. Charlotte Chelich went the distance in the circle, allowing five hits and striking out a career-high eight batters. She also belted one of the four home runs in game two.

It was Baker who got the barrage started with her first Bulldog home run to make it 2-1 in the second. Hickman tied the game in the third with an RBI single scoring Salyars.

In the fifth, Michaela Goad started the frame with a double and moved up on a wild pitch. She would score when Eva Viox popped a sacrifice fly to right field.

Moving to the sixth, the Bulldogs had the heart of their lineup up and delivered. Hickman tripled but could walk home on a blast by Wood to straightaway center field. Taylor drew a walk and would score on Chelich's two-run bomb, and later Viox earned a walk and came in on Lydia
Fieste's pinch-hit home run.

UIS would score a home run of their own in the seventh, but the damage was done.

Cassie Smith extended her hitting streak to 20 straight games with singles in both contests. Hickman collected four hits on the afternoon.
