CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – Truman State Baseball managed just two runs in a 3-1 series loss at Maryville (Mo.) falling in Game 1 by a 5-1 final with the Saints taking an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.
Runs proved to be difficult for the Bulldogs in the four-game set with the Saints scoring 25 to Truman State's 10. The recent schedule has been difficult for the 'Dogs having now lost 10 of 11 since riding a four-game winning streak from March 29 through April 4 with wins over Southwest Baptist (Mo.) and McKendree (Ill.)
Game 1 started with
Colin Mueth singling and stealing second, but Maryville cut him down attempting to steal third and the 'Dogs were turned away after one. Neither team was able to score until the fifth when the Saints plated five, all charged to Truman State starter
Isaac Epp, on two, two-run doubles.
Jackson Mitchell, working in relief of Epp, tied a season-high 2.2 innings pitched giving up two hits and no walks. Maryville starter Ben Gregory went the distance allowing only one run on four hits, including a seventh-inning
Dakota Joggerst solo shot, the third by the Truman State third baseman on the season. His 3.1 innings of work was the second-fewest by Epp in a game in which he allowed six hits, three bases on balls, and zero strikeouts.
Nick Phillips took the bump for the Bulldogs in Game 2 and, like Epp, worked 3.1 innings before being chased. The appearance was the shortest of the season for the freshman hurler and the second time in which Phillips surrendered 10 runs, nine of which were earned. Down 2-0 after one, Phillips gave up a second-inning grand slam among the five Saint runs scored with Truman State never seriously threatening the lead.
Cole Eggerding worked two clean innings in just his second appearance in 2025 while
Noah Frailey gave up a run on two hits as the final pitcher of the day in Purple and White.
As with Game 1, the Truman State offense was able to generate just a single run on two hits, each of which game in the third when
Rawlins Brant's single plated
Charlie Berry after the second baseman reach on his eighth double. The Bulldogs mustered only five baserunners on the two hits, walks by Mueth and
Luke Roussel, and Joggerst being hit by a pitch in the sixth.
The Bulldogs return home 9-30 overall, 6-18 GLVC, for consecutive weekend series against conference foes Lincoln (Mo.) April 25-27 and Quincy (Ill.) May 1-3.
