Drury Squeezes Past Truman State Softball On Saturday

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State Softball team found itself on the losing end of two one-run games on Saturday as the Drury Panthers swept the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with scores of 2-1 and 4-3. The Bulldogs will wrap up the weekend by hosting Southwest Baptist on Sunday in their annual "Strikeout Cancer" game, starting at noon.

In game one, the Bulldogs had runners in scoring position in the second, third, and fourth innings but failed to capitalize. Drury broke the scoreless tie with a two-out double in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth on a pair of extra-base hits. In the bottom of the seventh, Lydia Feiste led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Nina Fenasci to reach base as the next batter. However, the next two hitters were retired on fielder's choices, and Cassie Smith lined out to third to end the game.

Game two saw Drury take an early 1-0 lead, only for Truman State to erase it in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Emily Wood. Victoria Garland tied the game in the second with the first of her two home runs in the contest. Kyleia Salyars put Truman State back on top in the bottom of the second with a double that scored Fenasci. Garland's second homer in the fourth knotted the score at 3-3. In the fifth, Landry Cochran doubled to drive in Sophia Luetticke for the go-ahead run.

The Bulldogs mounted a threat in the sixth. Charlotte Chelich led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Fenasci, who then stole second to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. A strikeout looking and two stellar plays by left fielder Luetticke preserved Drury's one-run lead. Luetticke made two more standout plays in left in the bottom of the seventh. After a walk and a single brought Chelich to the plate, she fouled off several pitches before fouling out to the third baseman to end the game.
