Madsen obtained an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science (Sport Management) from Truman in May of 2008 and earned a Master of Arts in Leadership degree - also from Truman - in December of 2013.

He has served on numerous NCAA committees, beginning his third season on the NCAA Div. II baseball national committee after completing a two-year stint on the NCAA Div. II men's soccer national committee from 2011 through 2013. He also spent three seasons as part of the NCAA Div. II women's volleyball regional committee in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The Decatur, Ill.-native has received accolades for his work with volleyball, as he is a two-time recipient of the AVCA's Grant Burger Media Award.

From 2009-2011, Madsen also served as the men's golf program's co-head coach alongside Jim Berrey, prior to the program being cut prior to the 2011-12 season. He currently assists women's golf head coach Clint Fitzpatrick with the Bulldog women's program.

During his time as an undergraduate student at Truman, Madsen was a student worker for the Department of Athletics, serving as the primary contact for volleyball, women's basketball and baseball as a senior. He also played a major role in the execution of the 2007 NCAA Volleyball South Central regional. Outside of athletics, he also spent two years as a sports reporter for The Index, the campus newspaper, winning two national awards for various feature and coverage pieces.

Tyler and his wife, Danielle, were married in June of 2012 and reside in Kirksville.
