Ian Matlack

Ian Matlack, MA, ATC is an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Truman State University Department of Athletics, serving as the primary athletic trainer for the Bulldogs’ men’s soccer and softball programs. In his role, Matlack provides comprehensive medical care, including injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, and return-to-play management, while supporting the overall health and well-being of Truman’s student-athletes.

Matlack joined the Truman State sports medicine staff after completing his Master of Arts in Athletic Training at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he graduated summa cum laude in May 2024. During his graduate education, he accumulated more than 1,600 clinical hours across a wide range of athletic settings, gaining experience at the Division I, junior college, and high school levels.

His clinical background includes work with Creighton University women’s soccer, Iowa State University football, Iowa Western Community College, and multiple high school programs. Throughout these experiences, Matlack developed and implemented rehabilitation protocols for lower extremity injuries, assisted with post-operative ACL rehabilitation, utilized advanced modalities such as anti-gravity treadmill training and shockwave therapy, and managed high-volume patient care environments. He has also worked closely with athletes managing chronic health conditions and assisted in administrative and organizational operations within athletic training facilities.

Matlack brings additional event and championship-level experience, having provided medical coverage at the NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament, university hockey competitions, and regional football camps. His background also includes leadership roles during large-scale athletic events, where he helped coordinate staff coverage and athlete care.

Originally from Saint Joseph, Missouri, Matlack earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Missouri Western State University, graduating cum laude in 2021. He previously completed undergraduate athletic training internships with Missouri Western football, gaining early hands-on experience in both in-season and off-season care.

Matlack is a Board of Certification (BOC) Certified Athletic Trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He holds certifications in CPR/BLS, First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, and QPR Gatekeeper training. He is proficient in multiple electronic medical record systems, including ATGenius, ATS, and Kitman, and is trained in concussion baseline testing platforms such as C3 Logic and Sway Medical. His clinical skill set includes manual therapy techniques, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, cupping, and kinesiotaping.
