MACOMB, Ill. – In their final exhibition game the Truman Women's Basketball team knocked of Division I Western Illinois University 61-54 on Sunday. Sophomore Jennifer Conway led the Bulldogs with 16 points and nine rebounds.
“I though our kids played hard and came in and executed our game plan from start to finsh,” said Head Coach Michael Smith. “Amy Galey managed the game as well as I've seen her since her arrival and Jennifer Conway got us going from the start.”
Freshman Kayla Klopfenstein (Marion, Iowa, Linn-Mar) gave the Bulldogs a double-digit lead at 29-18 with just over three minutes to go in the first half and took a 29-23 advantage into the locker room.
Fellow newcomer Bianca Szafarowicz (Wheeling, Ill., Wheeling) gave the 'Dogs their largest lead of the game at 44-31 with 12 minutes left in the game.
The Leathernecks would scratch their way back into the game and closed to within three with 1:27 remaining.
“Our bench gave us good minutes and our kids were able to maintain the lead towards the end when they made a push,” said Smith.
Szafarowicz scored with just under a minute to play to make it a five point game and Amy Galey (Excelsior Springs, Mo., Excelsior Springs), Breanna Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister), Jennifer Conway (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) and Klopfenstein all made free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Conway finished with 16 points while Daniels added 14 and Galey 11 to lead the 'Dogs.
Truman will open up the 2010-11 season on November 19th against Barry University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
