KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Red hot three-point shelling by the Pittsburg State Gorillas and ice cold free throw shooting by the Truman women resulted in a 70-58 victory for the visitors on Wednesday night in Pershing Arena.
Pittsburg State (10-7 overall; 8-5 MIAA) dropped in a season-high 13 three-pointers on the Bulldogs including two huge triples late in the game as the Bulldogs were trying to rally for a comeback. Of the 26 made field goals by the Gorillas, 13 went for three.
Meanwhile, Truman (8-9 overall; 6-7 MIAA) was able to get to the foul line but shot a season-low 45% from the charity stripe and went just 3-of-12 in the final 20 minutes. For the game, the Bulldogs were 11-of-24.
The Gorillas used early runs of 11-0 and 8-0 in the first six minutes of the game to take a 14-point lead. Truman would trim the lead to as few as six but Drew Roberts tear-dropped a trey to squelch the momentum.
Truman came out of the locker room and scored the first six points but a pair of timeouts, one by each team once again zapped the Bulldogs energy.
Kylee Baldetti ended the quick run with a basket and then recorded one of the Gorillas' eight blocked shots which led to more Pitt State points.
The lead swelled to 18 points with just over 10 to play before the Bulldogs finally got something going. Amy Galey 's(Excelsior Springs, Mo., Excelsior Springs) three-pointer with 4:54 to play cut the lead under 10 and Breanna Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister) followed up with a basket to bring the 'Dogs back to within six.
They would get as close as five on two separate occasions with the last coming with 2:37 showing. Roberts would drive a dagger home with a right angle three and Baldetti, the Gorillas' post player, put the exclamation point on it with a triple with under a minute to play.
Jennifer Conway (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) had a career high 16 points but the Truman bench, which came into the game outscoring their opponents by over 100 points on the season, were held to just eight. Becka McHenry (Fraser, Mich., Fraser) had 14 while Galey and Daniels each scored 10.
Ten of the 14 Gorillas players registered points with Baldetti recording a double-double with 12 and 11 rebounds. Alexa Bordewick had a team-high four three-pointers en route to her dozen points.
The Bulldogs will embark for two straight road games against nationally-ranked teams in Kansas. Truman will play next on Sunday against Emporia State before heading to Washburn next Wednesday night.
