Bulldogs Can't Hang First Loss On #5 Washburn

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The #5-ranked Washburn Ichabods scored touchdowns on their first four possessions and went on to remain unbeaten with a 42-14 victory over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon for Homecoming. Andy Mundwiller and Dallas Grier each had touchdown receptions for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs faced a third and one on their opening drive and quarterback J.B. Clark went for pay dirt but his pass to Donald Harvey went off his fingertips to fall incomplete and force a punt.

A personal foul, roughing the passer penalty, was called against the Bulldogs following an incomplete pass on third and eight on Washburn's first drive. Five plays after getting new life, Washburn's Justin Cooper would score from five yards out to put the Ichabods up 7-0.

Washburn opened their next drive with some trickery as receiver DeJaun Beard tossed a 49-yard pass to Ronnell Garner that moved the ball down to the Bulldog 25. Dane Simoneau found Greg Schoenberg in the endzone for a 14-0 lead with 3:08 left in the quarter.

Garner then burned the Bulldogs again catching a 72-yard pass from Simoneau on the first play of the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-0.

The Bulldogs got seven back on the final play of the half as Clark found Mundwiller in the back of the endzone as seniors connected on a 36-yard touchdown reception.

Washburn would strike quickly to start the third as Simoneau threw his own 36-yard TD pass to Schoenberg just 1:20 into the half.

Dallas Grier would grab his second TD pass of the season as he would snag an 18-yard pass from Clark with 7:45 showing on the third quarter clock.

Justin Cooper led the Washburn offense with 168 yards rushing and three touchdowns while Simoneau went 17-of-29 for 275 yards.  The Ichabods racked up 553 yards of total offense.

Clark threw for 239 with Grier catching 10 passes for 109 yards. However, Clark was sacked nine times against the MIAA's top defensive team. Punter Eric Phillips averaged 42.7 yards with a long of 53 in 10 opportunities.

The Bulldogs falls to 2-4 overall, 1-4 in the MIAA while Washburn remains perfect at 6-0 and 5-0 in the league.  Truman will be at Missouri Southern next Saturday in Joplin, kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
