BOLIVAR, Mo. - - A six run eighth inning in game one propelled the Truman softball team to a game one win before Southwest Baptist rebounded with a one run win in the nightcap to post a Friday afternoon split in the opening doubleheader of a Bulldog weekend road trip.
The Bulldogs (15-13, 3-3 MIAA) logged their third split of the MIAA season, grabbing a 7-3 win in the opener of Friday's action before falling 2-1 to the host Bearcats (3-13, 1-5 MIAA) in the late game.
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, SBU scored one in the bottom half to take an early 1-0 edge. Truman's Christine Ulses tied the game with a blast to lead off the second, leading to what would be a six-inning stalemate between the squads.
The game moved to the 8th inning, where the Bulldogs strung together seven consecutive hits to start the inning, running the train for six runs and building a 7-1 lead going to the bottom half. After SBU got two back off a homerun, Beth Schnurbusch came on in relief of Ashley Rotkvich to get the final two outs and give the 'Dogs the win.
Laura Miller and Alex Weber combined for five hits at the top of the lineup, while Ulses added three of her own to go with a pair of RBI in defense of Rotkvich, who struck out three in 7.1 innings of work in picking up her fourth win of the year.
The Bearcats took the lead in game two behind a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning in front of a Miller RBI double, plating Lexi Rollet in the top of the fifth. However, Miller was stranded at third with one out, and the Bulldogs couldn't find the equalizer, falling 2-1. Elizabeth Grover went the distance, giving up two runs and striking out four.
Truman returns to action on Saturday afternoon in Warrensburg to face Central Missouri in a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
