Hot Start Leads Mules To Victory Over Bulldog Football

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The #20 ranked University of Central Missouri scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions and was able to defeat the Truman Bulldogs 54-30 on Saturday. J.B. Clark threw for over 300 yards and Derek Koon matched his season and career long with a 42-yard field goal against the Mules.

The Mules took the opening kickoff and marched 72 yards in 14 plays with quarterback Tommy Corwin hitting Jamar Howard on a 14-yard pass for the early 7-0 lead.

A quick three and out by the Bulldog offense kept the momentum going for UCM as they only took five plays to go 62-yards with Corwin finding David Cannon on a 16-yard route to go up 14-0 with 7:34 showing in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs established their offense in their next possession but couldn't punch it in while having to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Koon. The 'Dogs drove the ball 82-yards on 10 plays but were stalled at the UCM 11.

Corwin then started the next drive with a 39-yard strike to Howard to move the ball quickly down to the Bulldog 16 and five plays later Darrian Salter punched it in from a yard out to grab a 21-3 lead.

The 'Dogs got a big punt by Eric Phillips that pinned the Mules inside their own one and the defense got the necessary three and out to set up a short field to shift the momentum back. Harnish Ayora scored from two yards out to cap off the 44-yard drive to bring the Bulldogs to within 11 but again Corwin and the Mules showed their quick strike ability as Taylor Dyer caught a 38-yard touchdown pass as Central went 73 yards in four plays to go up 28-10.

Koon answered with a 32-yard field goal for Truman but the back breaker came right before half as Howard caught a 22-yard pass and got in the endzone as the second quarter expired to put the Mules up 35-10 at the break.

The Bulldogs would get 42-yard field goal by Koon to match his season and career high, a four-yard TD reception by Anthony Brown in the third quarter and a 19-yard pass caught by Paul Taylor in the fourth for their remaining points.

Clark finished 20-of-39 for a season-high 304 yards with redshirt freshman Kurt Loyd having a big day with four catches totaling 113 yards. Loyd caught a 61 yard pass and averaged 28.2 yards per reception. Dallas Grier had eight catches for 95 yards, his most of the season.

Corwin was nearly unstoppable with a 32-of-41 passing day and 360 yards with four touchdowns. Jamar Howard had nine recptions for 129 yards and David Cannon also had nine for 94. LaVance Taylor scored on a 77-yard rush to give him 110 yards on the day. Central put up 571 yards of total offense.

The Bulldogs (1-3; 1-3 MIAA) will step outside of conference play next week with a trip to McKendree University (Ill.) The Bearcats are making the transition to Division II after several playoff years in the NAIA. Kickoff from Lebanon, Ill. is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
