Bulldogs Come Up Big With OT Win At Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Marek Bush posted his first collegiate double-double as the Truman Men's basketball team won 87-86 in overtime at Missouri Western State University on Wednesday night to end a four-game winless streak. Bush (Kansas City, Mo., Lincoln Prep) set career highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

Western (6-8; 1-7 MIAA) scored six of the first eight points to start overtime and took a four-point lead but the 'Dogs (5-10; 3-5 MIAA) battled back with Seth Jackson (St. Louis, Mo., CBC) giving Truman the lead at 81-80. With 1:16 left, Mike Carlson (Superior, Wisc., Marshall HS) gave Truman the lead for good at 83-81.

James Harris, who ended regulation scoring Western's final seven points, including the game tying three-pointer with 14 seconds left, missed two key free throws with 52 seconds showing.

Jackson made it a four point game with 25 left however Lavonte Douglas scored with 10 showing to cut it to two.

Tom Norton (Bloomington, Ill., Bloomington Catholic) drained a pair of free throws to put the margin back at four but Harris connected on his second triple of the game to trim it back to one.

Bush missed on his first free throw attempt with two seconds left then purposely missed the second  as the Griffons did not get a good look to win it at the buzzer.

In regulation time, Truman took their largest lead at seven points with 6:43 left as Andrew Vander Zwaag (Johnston, Iowa, Johnston HS) knocked down a triple but then both teams battled down the stretch. The seven point lead was the most by either team during the game.

Harris's guarded three-pointer dropped in to tie the game at 72 apiece with eight seconds remaining.

The Bulldogs had a late chance to win the game but Norton's shot fell off the rim at the buzzer.

The Truman bench, behind Bush and nine points and seven rebounds from Tyler Anderson (West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley HS), was key in the win. The bench scored 38 points on the night and 23 of the 36 in the first half. The Bulldogs also were big on the boards with a 12 rebound advantage, including 17 on the offensive end.

Jackson finished with 18 points for the Bulldogs and Norton was also in double-figures with 13.

T.J. Johnson led all scorers with 22 while Harris' barrage at the end of both regulation and overtime gave him 21 on the night.

Truman will wrap up the three-game road trip with a game at Lincoln University (Mo.) in Jefferson City on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
