KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman women's basketball team suffered their second straight conference loss as they fell to Fort Hays State 69-63 in Pershing Arena on Monday afternoon. Breanna Daniels led Truman with 14 points while freshman Allie Norton scored 10, all in the first half.
Bianca Szafarowicz (Wheeling, Ill., Wheeling) scored six points during a 10-0 Truman (8-3; 3-3 MIAA) run that erased the Tigers' six-point lead midway through the second half. Szafarowicz's bucket at the 12:11 mark gave Truman a 46-42 advantage and forced Fort Hays (12-1; 4-1 MIAA) to use a timeout to stop the rally.
The timeout did just want it needed to do for the Tigers as they went on a 14-1 run over the next seven minutes as Truman missed their next eight shots. Fort Hays took the first double-digit lead by any team with 1:38 left and were able to maintain a more than two possession advantage the rest of the way.
Crista Bechard scored a career-high 20 points for the Tigers going seven of 10 from the floor with three three-pointers. Kate Lehman added 15 points with four blocks and nine rebounds off the bench.
Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister) scored 10 of her game-high 14 in the first half as did Norton. Truman was dealt a setback when leading scorer and rebounder Jennifer Conway (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) left the game just four minutes in with an injury and did not return.
Truman will play their next three on the road starting on Saturday when they face defending conference champion Northwest Missouri at 1:30 p.m. The Bearcats will be at Missouri Western on Wednesday night with each team looking for their first conference win.
