Bulldogs Struck By Ichabods On Stormy Day

TOPEKA, Kan. – The 19th ranked Washburn (Kan.) Ichabods struck with 14 points in the third quarter following an 81-minute lightning delay to down the Truman (Mo.) State University Bulldogs 35-24 on Saturday afternoon. The game was plagued with by two lengthy weather delays totaling over two hours.
 
The Ichabods (6-1; 6-1 MIAA) came into the day as the MIAA's top passing defensive team and it proved prophetic as Washburn picked off Conrad Schottel four times during the contest with two being returned for touchdowns.  Willie Williams had a 43-yard INT return for a score to make it 14-3 with 5:03 left in the second quarter and Devon Connors put the game out of reach with a 36-yard pick six with 6:35 left in the game.
 
Garrett White had two rushing touchdowns, a one-yard and two-yard run for the Bulldogs (4-3; 3-3 MIAA) and Schottel had another one-yard plunge late in the fourth.  Schottel finished with 175 yards through the air with Will Mosquera catching four passes for 45 yards and rushing for another 46. Richie Schumacher went over 300 career tackles with a game-high 14 stops for the Bulldog defense.
 
Washburn's Mitch Buhler threw for 249 yards and two scores and Hayden Groves rushed for 162 yards including a big run to set-up the Ichabods first score. Groves took the first play from scrimmage 30 yards into Bulldog territory as the Ichabods marched down the field in 11 plays for 75 yards with Buhler finding Ryan Mertz for the early lead.
 
After another 41-yard rush by Buhler, the Bulldog defense would settle down and hold the Ichabods scoreless the rest of the quarter.
 
Truman gained some momentum in the second with Derek Koon connecting on his 31st career field goal to cap off a 12-play, 43-yard drive at the 7:07 mark of the second quarter.
 
Williams then struck with his pick six on Truman's next possession to put the 'Bods up for good at 14-3.
 
Schottel set up Truman's first touchdown with a 27-yard rush down to the Ichabod three followed by White's one-yard score.  
 
The Bulldogs headed to the locker room trailing 14-10 but it would be a long wait with lightning in the Topeka area.
 
Following an hour and 21 minute delay, Truman got the second half kickoff and picked up a pair of first downs before stalling out. Buhler and Groves marched Washburn down the field in nine-plays with Groves scoring for 12-yards out an a 21-10 lead.
 
Schottel threw three straight incomplete passes in the next series of downs and after a punt by Eric Phillips, Buhler wasted little time as he found Mark Fancher for a 69-yard touchdown pass and a 28-10 lead.
 
Patrick Blackwell sacked Buhler later in the fourth and forced a fumble that was recovered by Schumacher but Schottel gave the ball right back with another interception on the next play.
 
White would score his seventh rushing TD of the season at the 11:17 mark to pull Truman back to within 11.
 
After a defensive stop, Connors grabbed the interception from Schottel and took it in from 36-yards to seal the victory.
 
Schottel would score from one-yard out on the Bulldogs next possession on a drive that featured a 38-yard run by Justin Corcoran and a 13-yard gain by White.
 
The Bulldogs will face their second straight nationally ranked team for Homecoming next week in Kirksville. The Emporia (Kan.) State University Hornets will bring their perfect 7-0 record to Stokes Stadium for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
