Opening Tip:
The Truman men's basketball team returns to Pershing Arena this Saturday (Dec. 8) afternoon, looking to move to 2-0 in the MIAA when it hosts Missouri Southern at 3:00 pm. The Bulldogs are coming off a 71-69 road win at Missouri Western on Wednesday night to open league action.

Saturday afternoon will be the only scheduled regular season meeting between the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-0 MIAA) and Lions (5-3, 0-0 MIAA) this year, as the teams are in different pods for conference scheduling purposes. While Truman kicked off league play on Wednesday, Missouri Southern was the one idle MIAA team in the conference schedule. However, like Truman, MSSU will be after its third straight victory having most recently downed Central Bible 69-39 on Dec. 4 in Joplin.

Coaches' Clipboard:
1) Three-Point Attack: The Bulldogs took 37 three-point attempts at Missouri Western on Wednesday night, the most for the program in any game since 35 against Missouri S&T on Jan. 23, 2002. Truman is shooting 35% from long-range on the season, averaging 8.7 made per game – tops in the MIAA.
2) Battle on the Defensive Glass: MSSU boasts the conference's top offensive rebounder in Jordan Talbert (3.3/gm), while Truman is the league-leader in defensive rebound %, checking in at 77.2%.
3) Sharing the Spotlight: A handful of Bulldogs took control in the second half of Wednesday night's win at Missouri Western, as Tom Norton had a five-point possession, Mike Carlson scored 11 of 12 points in a stretch, and Cole Myers hit the game-icing triple.

Bulldog Tip-Ins:

  • Truman is shooting 45.5% from the field as a team so far in 2012-13, including a 34.9% mark from three-point range.
  • The 'Dogs are getting to the free throw line an average of 20.7 times per game and are connecting at a 65.3% rate.
  • The Bulldogs have a 1.35 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year, forcing 89 turnovers while committing just 66 of their own.
  • Minutes have been distributed well amongst Woodley's squad, with eight players ranging between 17.0 and 23.0 minutes per game. Only Cory Myers (29.3) and Mike Carlson (27.8) are averaging more than 23 minutes.
  • The 8.7 triples per game lead the MIAA, with Isaac Gardner sitting second in the conference with 18 total.
  • Truman has controlled the ball this season, posting a +4.2 turnover margin – the second-highest mark in the MIAA.

Dialing Long Distance:
The Bulldogs have taken an average of 24.8 three-point attempts per game so far this season, including a 10-year high of 37 in Wednesday night's game at Missouri Western. Isaac Gardner is one of the league's top shooters at 35% and three made per game, while the addition of Tom Norton (204 made three-pointers) will likely only increase the efficiency of Truman's shooting. Freshman Cole Myers has hit 11, while the team's leading scorer, Mike Carlson, adding nine as part of his inside-out attack.

Seeing Double:
A set of twins has seen a high-level of playing time early this season, as Ankeny, Iowa-natives Cole and Cory Myers have combined for more than 13 points, six rebounds and six assists between them this year. The Myers' duo have each started all but one game, with Cory's 29.3 minutes per game setting the pace for the 'Dogs.

Turning the Red Shirts Purple:
Senior Tom Norton and freshman Jaylon Jones were both tagged at the beginning of the season as planning on using a redshirt year; however, head coach Matt Woodley put both players in uniform for Wednesday night's game at Missouri Western. Norton scored 11 points in 23 minutes, while Jones played eight minutes and scored two points.

Scouting the Lions:
Missouri Southern is 5-3 on the season, having started the year with a three-game win streak, followed by a three-game losing streak, and now having won two straight entering Saturday. This is the first conference game of the year for the Lions, who are just 1-3 away from Joplin this season.

Marquis Addison (16.0 ppg; 46% FG) and Jordan Talbert (13.4 ppg; 6.8 rpg) are the top holdovers from last season's 22-8 team that reached the NCAA first-round. Southern is averaging 67 points per game, is allowing 64 points, and is shooting 43% overall as a team.

Robert Corn is in his 24th season at Missouri Southern.

Bulldogs Notables vs. MSSU:

  • Mike Carlson went just 2-for-13 in two games last season, averaging 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.
  • Isaac Gardner has six triples in three career games, averaging 7.3 points per game.
  • EJ Hicks averaged 10.5 points and 3.0 assists per game last season.
  • Seth Jackson averaged 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season.
  • Tom Norton has played six games against the Lions, averaging 15.2 points per game, shooting 45% from three-point range (19-for-42).

Five Peas in an MIAA Pod:
For the 2012-13 season, the MIAA will be invoking a “pod” system for basketball scheduling, resulting in 18 league matches for all 15 of the conference's schools. While all 15 teams will fall under set of standings with no delineation between pods, Truman will play Central Missouri, Lincoln, Southwest Baptist and newcomer-Lindenwood and Southwest Baptist twice each as part of one five-team grouping.

Emporia State, Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State will join with newcomers Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State as a second pod, while Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Washburn and Fort Hays will align with the final newcomer, Nebraska-Kearney, in a third pod.

At the end of the season, the top 12 teams will compete for the MIAA men's basketball championship. First-round games will be played on Monday, March 4 on campus sites with the top-4 teams and the first-round winners advancing to Kansas City for the remainder of the tournament as usual.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs take the week off for finals before returning to action on Dec. 18-19 at the Quincy (Ill.) tournament. Truman takes on the host Hawks for the second time this season in the opener at 7:30 pm on Tuesday the 18th.
