Bulldogs Win In OT For Fifth Straight

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Becka McHenry scored 19 points and the Truman women's basketball team spoiled senior day in Warrensburg as the Bulldogs downed the Central Missouri Jennies 80-75 in overtime for their fifth straight win to close out the 2011-12 regular season. The Bulldogs will be the sixth seed at the MIAA Postseason Tournament in Kansas City on Thursday night at 8:15 p.m.
 
Truman (17-9; 11-9 MIAA) trailed by nine early but clawed their way back to within three as Jennifer Conway (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) scored nine points in the first 20 minutes and were down 29-26 at the break.
 
The Bulldogs then scored the first seven points out of the gate to take a four-point lead.
 
Alyssa Rhodes tallied five straight to put the Jennies back on top.
 
The two teams would see-saw back-and-forth over the next four minutes before the Jennies got a bit undisciplined.  
 
Following a Breanna Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister) basket, McHenry (Fraser, Mich., Fraser) forced a steal and during the exchange the Central bench was tagged with a technical foul. Jenny Dorman (Pella, Iowa, Pella) knocked down the free throws, and then buried a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a five-point advantage.
 
After another scrum, Renae Shippy was T'ed up and Dorman hit two more free throws for a nine-point lead. Rachael Remick (Hillsboro, Iowa, Harmony) then knocked down a jumper at the line to give Truman a 56-45 cushion with 9:29 left.
 
Truman maintained their 10-point margin until Nicole Caddell scored six of the Jennies eight straight to pull Central to within two with 1:50 to play. Daniels gave the Bulldogs some breathing room with a make at 1:27 however Shaquanda Wiggins scored four straight to knot the game at 69 apiece with 41 seconds left.
 
Daniels missed with 18 seconds left and Shippy missed a buzzer beater to send the teams to overtime for the second straight time in Warrensburg.
 
Conway and Allie Norton (Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic) scored the first five in the extra period to put Truman ahead 74-69.

Caddell made it a three-point game with a minute left and Wiggins scored out of a timeout to make it a one-point game with 22 showing.
 
Norton was fouled on the inbounds and converted both times to extend the lead back to three and following a miss on a tying three-point attempt, McHenry calmly buried the dagger with two more free throws.
 
Central, averaging a conference leading seven three-pointers per game, was held to just one in the final 25 minutes.
 
Both teams shot 41% from the field and Central won the rebounding battle by nine, however the 'Dogs turned the ball over just 10 times and four in the second half and overtime.
 
McHenry scored 19 with seven assists, one turnover and three steals in 44 minutes played.  Conway added 17 and Nicole Gloor's (Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley) 11. Both seniors, Dorman and Daniels each scored nine.
 
Wiggins paced the Jennies with 22 points and Caddell finished with 20.
 
The Bulldogs will either face the Jennies or Emporia State (Kan.) at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday in the first round of the conference tournament depending on the outcome of the Lady Hornets game at Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Saturday night. The tournament will be played at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.
