Turnovers Plague 'Dogs In 6-3 Home Loss

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Two fourth quarter field goals by Gavin Voss lifted the Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College Pumas to a defensive 6-3 victory over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. Truman's win streak was snapped at five games but will still look to share the Great Lakes Valley Conference title next week at Indianapolis.

Both offenses were anemic on the day as they combined for just 484 yards while turning the ball over 10 times and totaling 212 penalty yards on 22 flags dropped.

Neither team changed the scoreboard until the Bulldogs tried to take advantage of a Chris Stanton interception at the Saint Joseph's 41. Stanton was brought down at the Pumas' 16 as Truman set up shop in the redzone.

Garrett White got down to the six on a 10-yard run and Dallas Grier was ruled out of bounds after a one-handed grab on a pass play on second and goal. Truman settled for a 22-yard field goal from Derek Koon, the 49th for the Bulldog senior to go up 3-0.

Truman had another golden chance on the ensuing kickoff as Koon's boot landed short should have been fielded by a pair of Bulldogs but the ball squirted free with James Wilson saving the possession for the Pumas.

The Bulldogs started the second half with possession and marched down to the Pumas' 19 before White was stripped of the football at the SJC five and recovered by Drew Byrd.

The defense backed up the Pumas up to their goal line for a third down play but a personal foul on what would have forced a punt from the endzone gave Saint Joseph's new life.

The Pumas' drive was halted at the Bulldog 20 and Voss missed the 37-yard field goal left to keep Truman ahead 3-0.

Another personal foul stymied Truman's first possession of the fourth quarter forcing Jacob Lamp into punt for the seventh time on the day.

SJC chipped away going 42-yards on 10 plays with Voss hitting from 32-yards and tying the game with 7:23 showing.

The Pumas got a big defensive play as Sheldon Martin came untouched from the blind side and forced a fumble that was recovered by Martin at Truman's 22.

Tate Borlik completed a 14-yard pass to Addison Dellinger and while the Truman defense didn't allow a touchdown, Voss converted from 21 yards to give the Pumas' the lead with 2:55 to play.

Truman tried to muster a final drive and got down to the SJC 34 before a botched snap was fumbled back to the Pumas.

The Bulldogs had a season-high seven turnovers on the day.

White led Truman with 94 yards rushing on 22 carries while Grier caught 10 passes for 58 yards. With those 10 catches, he moved over the 200 mark in career receptions and is two shy of second place all-time about Truman receivers with 204 catches.

Three Bulldogs finished with over 10 tackles led by Connor Nagel's 14, Jeramey Dockery's 13 and Matthew Bell's 11. Chris Stanton had the lone interception while Nagel and Brady Schroeder had fumble recoveries.

Borlik came in relief of injured Billy Vandemerkt at quarterback in the first quarter and completed 12-of-19 for 115 yards while Kobi Cook gained 78 yards on the ground.

The loss is the Bulldogs first in GLVC play but they will still have a chance to share the league title with Indianapolis next week on the road. The Greyhounds can clinch a tie for the title with a win Saturday at home against Quincy. Kickoff from Indianapolis is 4:00 p.m. (EST).
