QUINCY, Ill. - - Senior Mike Carlson recorded his fourth 20+ point game of the season, but the Truman men's basketball team shot just 27.1% from the field for the game to suffer its first loss in the 2013-14 season. The Bulldogs dropped the opening game of the Quincy Holiday Classic 66-49 to Hillsdale (Mich.) College.

The Bulldogs (7-1) scored the first basket of the game on a Carlson lay-up at the 19:43 mark of the opening half, but a 10-0 run by the Chargers (4-3) propelled Hillsdale to an eight point lead and prompted a Truman timeout.

The HC lead would hold around double-figures for the majority of the half before a pair of Reed Mells buckets helped pull the Bulldogs to within four at 26-22 with 49 seconds to play in the first half.

After Hillsdale carried a five-point lead into the intermission, a Carlson jumper drew the 'Dogs to within one possession; however, that would be the closest the purple and white would be the rest of the game, as HC rattled off a 20-3 run to build a 47-27 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.

From there, Hillsdale maintained its advantage, as the Bulldog offense hit on just 5-of-26 three-point attempts on the afternoon en route to the 66-49 final decision.

Carlson finished as the only Bulldog in double-figures, topping out at 22 points while also adding seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Seth Jackson and Cole Myers added six points each, while Kyle Kanaskie dished out a team-high three assists.

Tim Dezelski scored 31 points and added eight rebounds for HC, while Brandon Pritzl grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Bulldogs return to action at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 22) afternoon against Central (Ohio) State in day two action at the Quincy Holiday Classic.
