Baseball Splits Doubleheader On Sunday

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Truman Baseball team split the second day doubleheader against Washburn (Kan.) University on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs took the opener 8-1 with a solid six-innings from senior Logan Siegler but fell behind early and couldn't catch the Ichabods in a 16-11 game two loss. Truman returns to action on Wednesday in Bolivar against Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University.
 
Sophomore Paul Trenhaile opened up the scoring in the first game with an RBI single to stake the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead. Trenhaile would go four of seven on Sunday and collect four of his five RBIs in the series.
 
Washburn tied the game in the second but Trenhaile put Truman up for good when he was hit by a pitch with the sacks loaded. It was the second straight hit by pitch in the inning as Washburn pitchers pegged 11 Bulldogs throughout the weekend.
 
In the fourth, Blake Marino led off with a double and scored on a sac fly error off the bat of Joe Emery.
 
The Bulldogs would bust the game open in the fifth as Trenhaile's double scored Jarod Hahn and Corbin Williams doubled in three more.
 
Siegler pitched six innings to pick up the win allowing three Washburn hits and struck out five. The lone run surrendered was unearned.
 
Taylor Herrington RBI triple in the first got the Washburn offense going in game two.  Dakota Kell followed with an RBI double in the second as six Ichabod runners crossed the plate.
 
Eleven batters aided by four walks in an eight-run third inning gave Washburn a commanding 16-0 lead through three.
 
The Bulldogs fought back in their next at bat with Williams again delivering the big hit with a three-run double.
 
Trenhaile got another RBI single to score the seventh Bulldog run in the sixth.
 
Josh DeRouse plated two in the eight with an RBI double and the Bulldogs added two more in the ninth to cut the deficit to 16-11.
 
Jarrett Eiskina took the loss lasting just two innings and Connor Brady was the winner in relief for Washburn.
 
Series Notes:
Both offenses got off to good starts with Washburn hitting .327 as a team and the Bulldogs hitting .317…Paul Trenhaile led Truman with a .545 (6-of-11) batting averaging in the set and added five RBIs…Corbin Williams had six runs batted in for the Bulldogs…of the 10 pitchers used by Truman this weekend, five allowed no earned runs in 12 2/3 innings pitched, the other five allowed 23 earned runs in seven and a third innings…Dakota Kell paced Washburn with a .600 batting average and had a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Truman Baseball team rallied from five runs down to tie their season opening game but a six-run eighth inning lifted the Washburn (Kan.) University Ichabods to a 14-8 victory on Saturday afternoon.
 
Washburn scored five runs in the first two innings before the Bulldogs started to chip away. Chris Zrostlik had a two-run RBI double to put Truman on the board in the third and Zak Larkin added an RBI single in a two-run fourth to make it 6-4 Ichabods.
 
Blake Marino belted a two-run homer down the left field line in the fifth to pull the 'Dogs to within one at 7-6.
 
Paul Trenhaile knotted the game the next inning with a two-out single through the left side that plated Corbin Williams from second.
 
Washburn jumped back on top with an unearned run in the seventh but the Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the eighth when Jarod Hahn brought in Will Nader on a groundout. However, Truman left the inning with the bases loaded.
 
Things unraveled in the bottom of the inning when a pair of infield singles followed by some balks and wild pitches allowed Washburn to score six times and put the game out of reach.
 
Williams, Trenhaile, Marino and Jordan Howe each had two hits on the day for the Bulldogs while Taylor Herrington went four for four with four runs scored and Brad Alberts, Dakota Kell and Kyle Carnahan all had a trio of hits for the Ichabods.
 
Corey Anthony was the winner pitching three innings in relief while Cody Gardner took the loss following starter Tim Lee and Tyler McCreary to the mound for the Bulldogs.
