Northeastern State Takes Two Of Three From Bulldog Baseball

TALHEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State grabbed the final two games on the weekend series with the Truman Bulldogs to take the conference series. The River Hawks won on Sunday by scores of 10-4 and 12-7 after the Bulldogs won the opener 12-11.
 
Truman (2-6; 2-6 MIAA) is scheduled to host Missouri Western in a three-game series this weekend in Kirksville.
 
Blake Marino hit .462 for the series by going 6-of-13 and Zak Larkin was 5-of-12 with five runs scored and a .533 on base percentage. Truman hit .289 with 28 hits and was a perfect five of five on the base paths.
 
The River Hawks (5-3; 5-3 MIAA) got six RBIs from Cody Robinson and five apiece from Kegan Knight and Kyle Singleton as all three had big games on Sunday.
 
Truman 12, Northeastern St. 11 (Box Score)
Blake Marino went 4-for-5 with a two-run double and Joe Emery and Paul Trenhaile collected three hits apiece as the Bulldog offense continued to steamroll during the first weeks of the season.
 
The River Hawks scored four runs to start the game as they played as the visitor since the original series was slated to be played in Kirksville.
 
Trenhaile continued his torrid start by belting a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to pull Truman to within one.
 
Zak Larkin singled, stole second and came in on an RBI basehit by Joe Emery to tie the game and Chris Zrostlik would bring in the go-ahead run with a groundout.
 
NSU would regain the lead in the third tack on two more in the fourth to go up 8-5.
 
Marino singled in a pair to tie the game at eight apiece as Trenhaile and Jarod Hahn would come into score.
 
Hahn would put Truman ahead for go in the fifth with a sac fly.
 
Mike Monfre would drive one in the hard way as he was hit by a pitch for an bases loaded RBI and a pair of sac flies gave Truman a three-run inning in the sixth to go up 12-8.
 
NSU got a two-out double run scoring double in the eighth.
 
With the tying run on second, pitcher Mark Roberts got a game ending fly out to preserve the win for the Bulldogs.
 
Roberts pitched six-plus innings in relief of starter Tim Lee to pick up the win. Kyle Shambaugh was the losing pitcher going three innings for the River Hawks.
 
Northeastern St. 10, Truman 4 (Box Score)
 
Cody Robinson hit three home runs and the River Hawks pounded out 14 hits in a 10-4 victory in game two.
 
Truman's Zak Larkin belted a solo homer in the bottom of the first to put Truman up but NSU scored three times in the top of the second aided by two Bulldog errors.
 
In the third, the River Hawks executed a successful suicide bunt to plate another run then Robinson would hit his first home run, a two-run shot, to make it 6-1.
 
Robinson would hit a solo home run in the fifth and again in the seventh.
 
Truman got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh when Joe Emery drove in one on a bases loaded hit by pitch and Jarod Hahn hit into a fielder's choice.
 
George Craig pitched a complete game for NSU while Logan Siegler took the loss striking out five in five and a third innings pitched.
 
Northeastern St. 12, Truman 7 (Box Score)
 
The River Hawks got eight of their 12 runs in three separate innings all with two outs in a 12-7 win over the Bulldogs.
 
Truman struck first again as Zak Larkin reached via error and came in on Jarod Hahn's RBI groundout in the first.
 
NSU tied the game in the second after a single and two straight pass balls put the runner on third. Preston Cash would score on a double steal attempt that resulted in the Bulldogs nabbing the runner going to second.
 
Adam Bainbridge drove in Chris Zrostlik with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1.
 
Jarrett Eiskina fanned the first two in the fifth but a walk and a single led to a two-run double by Kegan Knight to give the River Hawks a 3-2 lead.
 
In the sixth, the Bulldogs again got the first two out but a pair of walks and a hit batsman coupled with two fielding errors pushed across two unearned runs to make it 5-2.
 
The Bulldogs would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning as they would bat around. T.J. Wood drew a bases loaded walk followed by two run singles by Larkin and Jarod Hahn to make it 7-5 Truman.
 
In the eighth and again with two outs, a pair of walks led to an RBI double by Knight and a go-ahead three-run homer from Kyle Singleton to put NSU up 9-7.
 
The River Hawks would pick up three unearned runs in the ninth for insurance.
 
Frank Spick was the victor for NSU while Tyler McCreary was saddled with the loss. The two teams combine for eight pitchers, nine hit batters, six errors and 11 bases on balls.
