Northwest Completes Series Sweep Of Bulldogs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri Bearcats completed a three-game sweep over the Truman Baseball team on Saturday by winning both ends of a doubleheader 8-0 and 15-8. The Bulldogs are scheduled to host Missouri Western on Wednesday to wrap up a seven-game home stand.

The Bearcats hit .324 for the series while taking advantage of 10 Truman errors and 13 walks. In addition, nine different Northwest players drove in runs and they had five home runs, all coming on Saturday.

Truman's Chris Zrostlik tied a school record with five hits in game three of the series. Zrostlik was 5-of-5 with seven RBIs and a pair of home runs.

The Bulldogs had chances to win all three games but on Saturday, during the doubleheader, were just 3-of-19 (.158) with runners in scoring position.

Game 1 Box Score
Northwest Missouri 8

A five run second inning aided by a pair of Truman errors was the difference in the Friday series opener. Derek Meyer reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a single by Charlie Krueger.

Meyer would score off a fielders' choice from Paul Johnson. With two outs, Brandon Huske appeared to end the inning but the errant throw into the outfield allowed Johnson to make it 2-0.

The inning continued when Cameron Bedard reached on another error that brought in a run.

Steven Garber then drilled a two-run single to center to put the Bearcats up by five.

The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead as Zak Larkin got the team's first hit in the fourth and scored on a single by Blake Marino. Joe Emery would score the second run in the fifth after he was hit by a pitch and came in off a ground out by Mike Monfre.

Northwest got the two runs back in the seventh when a single and walk were compounded by a third Truman error and a sac fly. The Bearcats added an eighth run in the ninth with another sac fly off the bat of J.J. Baccari.

Marino closed the scoring with his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Larkin and Marino had two hits apiece while Paul Trenhaile's 13-game hitting streak came to an end with a 0-for-3 day.

Logan Siegler took the loss after throwing six innings and allowing four hits and just one earned run. Marcus Garrett pitched seven innings to earn his second win of the season.

Game 2 Box Score
Northwest Missouri 8
Truman 0

The Bearcats used a pair of solo home runs and the momentum of an overturned call to shutout the 'Dogs in Saturday's opener 8-0.

Brandon Huske hit a solo shot in the top of the first and Eric McGlauflin led off the fifth with a homer to right to put the Bearcats up 2-0.

Corbin Williams led off Truman's first with a single and went to second on a bunt but was left there in a theme that would repeat itself in the first three innings.

Blake Marino singled and stole second but was left in the next inning and T.J. Wood was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on foul ball caught by the first baseman.

The dam broke in the sixth when J.J. Baccari was initially called out on a grounder that Paul Trenhaile had to tip-toe around first base when making the catch. After a protest by the Northwest bench, the umpires gathered and overturned the out. A sacrifice followed by an RBI single by Eric Swain made it 3-0.

Northwest would score two more on a single by Ryan Abernathy and a pair from Baccari in his second plate appearance of the inning.

Ryker Fox allowed five Truman hits in going the distance for the win while Jarrett Eiskina gave up just two earned runs in five and two-thirds for the loss.

Game 3 Box Score

Northwest Missouri 15
Truman 8

Northwest hit three, two-run homers and withstood a Chris Zrostlik record tying performance in a 15-8 series finale.

The Bearcats opened up a 9-0 lead through the first four innings behind Eric McGlauflin and Cameron Bedard's home runs.

Zrostlik drove in his first of seven RBIs with a single in the fourth.

After Northwest scored three more and threatened to rule-run the Bulldogs, Zrostlik hit his first collegiate home run to left that scored three more.

In the seventh, Paul Trenhaile doubled in Jarod Hahn and Zrostlik went opposite field for a second three-run blast and the Bulldogs pulled to within four at 12-8.

The Bearcats scored a two-out run in the eighth and got a walk and error to plate two more in the ninth.

Zrostlik collected his fifth hit of the game in the bottom of the ninth to tie the school record for most hits in a game. It has been accomplished six previous times, by Ron Reagan in 1977, Dale Werner in 1978, Chris Williams in 1980, Rick Resh in 1983, Rhett Lakin in1996 and lastly by Josh Dilday in 2008.

Chase Anderson went far enough to pick up his third win of the season for Northwest while Brett Gerstner took the loss.
